Please help me! My computer won't play AVI files because, in it's words, "no suitable decompresser could be found" What's it talking about? Please E-Mail me if you have an answer!

Mark,

Make sure you have video compression installed. To check this goto control panel, add/remove programs, windows setup, multimedia.

I have the same problem to open some .avi files, I have tried with Video for Windows and the answer was "can't find decompresser 'vids:iV50'". Do you know something about that ?
Thanks for help...

Just in case anyone would like to know, I found a program that played at least a couple of my AVI files that wouldn't otherwise play. You have to get it from intel, start here:

I usually have the exact same problem with this on RealPlayer. I sure hope someone finds a way to fix this problem that is popping up in .avi files.
I think i should start a page named:
"IV50? WHAT IV50?"

This is the second time I have had this problem, the first time I solved it using this solution suggested by you, but this time its not playing, the message VIDEO NOT AVAILABLE, CANNOT FIND VIDS:IV50 DECOMPRESSOR,appears. Now recently I have had a new graphics card installed, because the graphic card before was shared with video memory, now that has been disabled so the graphic card can function, could this be the case why the video decompression can't be found. Please help as so far nobody has come up with a solution.

*** "VIDS:DIV4" ERROR SOLVED ***

Okay..first of all, thanks to Dave's response number 23. Second..I do not know
much at all about this stuff. It's obvious that ALOT of other people do not know, either. I cannot vouch for this. All I can
say is I downloaded the codecs, and it worked. Too bad SOMEBODY could'nt have simply
said, hey..do this, and your problem will be solved. That's all I wanted. The .avi files I
was trying to play simply would'nt play correctly. Anyways, this worked for windows98
and media player. It also allowed the files
to play in quicktime. I would suggest to download the latest media player from Microsoft AND quicktime from Apple. Even though these programs do not seem to support
certain stuff. HERE IS THE ANSWER: Go to

http://pages.prodigy.net/jagfire3/codecs.html

Then click on the first link that says "mpeg4", then download that file. Once you get it and install it, I suggest you reboot your computer, though it might not be necessary..after that It may work for you. It
did for me! Well people, have phun!
