This is really getting on my nerves... No .avi files will play, or at least, a large portion of them. Those burned to discs, those downloaded.. I don't know what's wrong with it. I've tried using Winamp, divX, Real Rlayer, and Windows Media Player, and have downloaded the most recent versions... Still nothing.
DivX, I know should play them well... But, instead of playing the video, it'll show a green glitchy screen. Is it my video card? My OS? I have a fairly old system... 98 SE, 400 MgH, 64MB of RAM, but I wouldn't think that would be the cause... I can play all other video types just fine. Please tell me what's wrong X_XThanks

i'm having the same issue with a tv tuner card.
i researched and found that .avi files are 'container' files. there a 15 diff codecs that can compress/decompress an avi file. until one finds the right codec for thae particular file you want to play, its no go.
in my case, the vcr2 codec is needed to play captured tv clips the virtual vcr in the tv tuner card. the files will play on the computer that the ati tuner card is installed in, but not on any other computer i want to play them in. if they play sound, then no video, if they play video, then no sound. all settings are correct. as you say, gray headed is coming

Possibly it's encoded with XviD
Here's one - might have a look at FFDSHOW too
Why don't they make computers that will do what we think we want them to do?
