What's the difference between MPEG and AVI files? I've read that AVI's are much bigger. But I've noticed that people have movies that are smaller (in bytes) when they are in AVI format than when they are in MPEG format. For example, 540MB in AVI was about 1hr and 30min...where 730MB in MPEG format was only about 1hr. Can someone explain to me why this is and what the differences are?
Thanks

The answer is either really simple (screen size, length, frame rate, colours etc) or really complex. To get the complex analysis:

There's loads of info, but scroll down to "Part 3 - Video Formats and Compression Methods" and you get a fairly decent tutorial on the comparitive compression standards.
Hope it helps/is of interest
