Try checking out through the control panel/add/remove and then windows setup and click on Multimedia and there is a video compression listed and make sure it is set up and see what happens.

ATI used proprietary code in their VCR2 CoDEc that would only work with their ATI video card -- yet called the videos produced as *.avi as if they would play using any program that supported the avi format. They have caused so much frustration over their decision.
