Hi: I recently updated my AVG free anti-virus program and it's now causing me problems. It seems, after it runs a full scan, I cannot open any programs. I get the message "ISUNINST caused a general protection fault in module MMSYSTEM.DLL at 0004:00000db6". Does anyone know if there's a know problem with this program? Should I change it for another one? Or is there a simple solution to this? Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks so much.

Is it AVG7? If so there have been some problems on W98 but I've not seen yours mentioned. I have that sneaky feeling that AVG7 was written for XP and bodged to work W98 (but just thinking aloud).

ISUNINST is the uninstaller so I wonder if there might be some temporary files kicking around that are interfering. Any files in c:\windows\temp should be deleted (similarly c:\temp if you happen to have it).

While you are at it go to Control Panel/Internet Options, hit Delete files button (tick offline content). I would clear history as well.

If this doesn't help I would completely uninstall AVG (use a registry cleaner afterwards if you have one), reboot and install again - hope you kept the download.

If even that doesn't help I'm inclined to suggest that you try Avast (free) instead which is quite good and seems to behave better on W98. Obviously see what the rest of the team add to this - someone might have run into this particular problem.

Thanks for your quick response, Derek. You mention uninstaller. I did uninstall my old Norton program. Maybe I still have some files left from that? How would I get rid of them? I empty my temporary internet files faithfully, so I don't think that's the problem. If the new AVG 7 doesn't work well with Windows 98, maybe I should check out Avast that you mentioned. Do you know where I can find it? Thanks again.

You get it here:

AVAST

It might turn out to be your best move but in fairness I must add that there are also a lot of folk running AVG7 on W98 without any problem. AVG7 has had some email issues and bad reaction with firewalls (much of which can be tweaked out).

In my previous response c:\windows\temp is the main one to look at (Internet Files was just an afterthought).

Hard to say if any Norton stuff is still around. IF you don't use any Norton/Symantec products (like Norton System Works) then you could do a file/folder Find for those two names.

Having said that I have an approach with picking off files. It can cause disaster so I would make a temporary folder c:\dump and put any you find in there, "noting where they came from". If the worst happened it would be easy to restore a file from DOS but very tricky getting them out of the Recycle bin from there. If in doubt leave them in situ.

"IF" you are happy in the registry (potential killer) then you could search that too. Safer to use a registry cleaner if you have one.

Bear in mind that we have no good case for it being anything to do with your previous Norton, so you may prefer to leave well alone.

Try replacing the MMSYSTEM.dll using SFC.
Perhaps it has been corrupted.
(I'm running AVG7 on Win98FE with IE6sp1 and Tiny Personal Firewall. I have no problems)

No problems here, running AVG7 with IE6, Firefox and Zone alarm. I did uninstall the old AVG6 and cleaned the registry with JV16 prior to installing AVG7.

Thanks for all your input everyone. Before switching to AVAST, I went to snapfiles.com and downloaded tuneup utilities, but when I try to run it, I get the message that Windows cannot run the program because it is in an invalid format. If I try downloading this again, won't it be in the same format? Should I forget the clean up and just uninstall AVG and try AVAST? Thanks so much again. As you may be able to tell, I'm no expert.

Don't know it but I tend to be guarded against anything that appears in the advertising blocks (can be spyware) and usually want payment sometime.

Most W98 tuneup programs are a waste of time and can make matters worse. You can do more on your own.

If your machine is unduly slow then report it on this forum as a new post and we can have a look into it for you.

Hello,
I recently uninstalled AVG 7 and I still have folders, files and registry entries. I don't know if I can just delete them or how to get rid of this. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks
