Auto-Protect Failure

I recently installed Norton Antivirus 2004 Professional. For some strange reason, the auto-protect is always off when my computer boots. I have to manually start the program, and when I select auto-protect, even though it says i've enabled it, when i reboot it still won't restart. Any suggestions?
