I'm trying to see if I have all the updates needed on this old Win 98 computer (I know I dont) but when I go to the start button and click on the Windows Update site I get a message that "The page cannot be found". I can go to the Win site but when I attemp to click on automatic update (when they scan your computer for needed updates) I get the same message "The page cannot be found". I can see that they still have individual updates but I'm not sure which ones I need and could reallu use that automatic scan feature.

Unfortunately there are many, many things that can cause the behavior you describe, below is my standard but still not complete list of things to look at in getting the WU software/ActiveX component installed and working correctly.

Things to do for WU
* Apply updates one at a time. Big trouble awaits you
someday if you totally ignore this warning.

Control Panel - Internet Options
* Add at least one language (General tab, Languages)
* Delete temporary internet files (General tab)
* Internet zone, click Default then OK (Security tab)
* Check use SSL 2.0 and 3.0 (Advanced tab)
* Uncheck Server Cert revocation (Advanced tab)

Other issues - non Internet Options
* Consult end of C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log file for error
numbers to search for at trouble shooter site. Read
ALL suggestions, investigate ALL suggestions, apply only
those that apply to your system as per above investigations.
In other words, just because it doesn't say 98 outright
doesn't mean that the fix is not valid for 98 - investigate
if it IS. http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
* If update is listed in Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs,
highlight it and Remove it, revisit WU site and reapply the
update, now.
* Delete C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate folder. If you
want to keep your history file do not delete iuhist.xml
in V4 folder, move it, then do the delete. Let WU
site build a new folder at next visit. Close ie to move
file back to new V4 folder. Do not install updates if
history file is not in place in the V4 folder!
* AOL and Netscape users - go to WU site via Start button
* If cipher strength = 0 (toolbar - Help|About Internet Explorer)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;261328
* Rename Windows\Hosts file so that it doesn't block akamai site.
* Disable Spyblocker, Popup stoppers, Firewalls, and Anti-Virus.
* Make sure date, time and year are correct - reset them.
* Delete all instances of iuctl.dll files found.
* Delete Windows\Temp files and all WUTemp folders found.
* Reboot
* Go to the WU site with this secure url.

* Reinstall Microsoft Windows Script 5.6 from here
http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/list/webdev.asp
* Still no joy? Post last ten lines of WindowsUpdate.log file
with current symptoms, what it doesn't do (used to do)
and OS version, ie version and troublesome update number
or name. Don't skimp on the details.

Aternately one can apply the updates once downloaded from the
Catalog site by double clicking the download. The update can
be saved/moved anywhere and applied in the future as well.
