Is there such a thing as a computer turning itself back ON automatically at any specific time? My neighbor claims that around 3am every moirning, her computer comes ON. She switches the computer OFF the normal way, but I am not sure if she totally removes 115vac from the power cable. Whether she does this or not, what program in this eMachine with windows 98 SE would turn itself back to ON? Not sure where to start looking. Does anyone have any suggestions? She's out of town this weekend and I can't ask her about the 115vac removal from the power cord.

Your neighbor most likely has a motherboard that supports WOL (Wake On LAN) and also has the feature enabled in the motherboard's BIOS

One thing is certain, if the 115V was removed there would be no way it could possibly start (unless the gremlins plugged it in again).

Why go to such trouble to prevent power on? Just tell her to buy a surge protector. She should have one of those anyway. That way, the computer can't POSSIBLY power itself up if the power source is off.
Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

Computer can be set in BIOS to start up when power restores after a power fail. It can also be set to stay off. Maybe there just happens to be a power blip during the night.
Not sure if this is what Sabertooth meant - if so apologies for repetition.

Derek: You're right about that. That was my initial thought. It made me wonder how she controlled the input power.
Jennifer: I have no clue if she is coming straight off the wall or going through any power controlling devices. I will inform her of that. Thanks guys & gal, for your inputs. Much appreciated.

....and some of Ken Lay's "dirty" Enron boys must be secretly operating from somewhere for this to be happening every night @ 3 AM

You people obviously don't watch enough horror movies. If a TV (unplugged or not) can turn itself on then a computer should be able to also.

On my system I have, in the bios, an Automatic Power Up setting. It can be set to turn the system on everday at the sametime or set by date at a certain time. Mine I keep disabled. I enabled it for a test. System powered up at the time I set it to.
The Ark was built by an amateur; the Titanic by professionals.

Feedback: I want to thank all you guys and gal for your help. Bios setup and remote power control unit solved the whole problem. No more wakeup calls. Thanks again.
