If the lines refer to your CDRom drive, sound card or anything else that can be loaded by Windows uncheck them one at a time and reboot. If that device works with no problems leave it unchecked. You will have to remove references to your CDRom drive in config.sys also. You can also uncheck the lines for Himem.sys and Emm386.exe if they are there. These devices are loaded in autoexec.bat and config.sys to be availabe in a pure Dos boot.

Haynes is right. If you are running Win95/98, you DO NOT need anything in autoexec.bat or config.sys at all. However, if you want to run your CD-ROM in pure DOS mode, you will need to use MSCDEX, which is not automatically available under Win 95, but is available by choice under Win 98 with a Startup Boot Disk. Unless you have a very old sound card, or you are playing games in DOS mode where you need DOS drivers, I would eliminate any sound settings by REM ing them first in autoexec and config files. REM means to just place the statement "REM" without quotes, in front of each command line you find in autoexec and config sys. Yes, you also do not need HIMEM or EMM386 any longer...Win 95/98 automatically takes care of managing memory without these old memory managers any longer.
