My system locks up every time I turn it on? half way thru the boot up process it freezes. However I can boot into safe mode by pressing the F8 button on start up. When I get to safe mode and go to the "System Configuration utility" I see the following in the Autoexe.bat:

@C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVDX.EXE/Startup
REM [Header]

@ECHO OFF
REM [CD-ROM Drive]
REM [Miscellaneous]
REM [Display]
REM [Sound, MIDI, or Video Capture Card]
REM [Mouse]
rem - By Windows Setup - mscdex.exe/d:IDECD000/L:M

c:\PROGRAM~1\COMMON~1\NETWOR~1\VIRUS~1\401.XX\scan.exe c:\
@IF ERRORLEVEL 1 PAUSE

I cant really read the Autoexe.bat...something just doesnt look right there. Any help would be great...thanks

Rebbot the machine in sfate mode again nad find the autoexec.bat, right click the autoexec and choose 'edit' and type rem follow by space in front of each line thta does not have rem in front, save and reboot, or you can just change the autoecec.bat to autoexec.old to see what will happen.

It would "appear" that you have 2 antivirus programs installed and just recently installed a new one (in addition to Norton).

That one is scanning your entire disk on every boot. (at least that is what the command appears to be doing).

Edit the autoexec.bat file and place a REM in front of the line

c:\PROGRAM~1\COMMON~1\NETWOR~1\VIRUS~1\401.XX\scan.exe c:\

Eg:

REM c:\PROGRAM~1\COMMON~1\NETWOR~1\VIRUS~1\401.XX\scan.exe c:\

Having 2 installed can be counter productive and cause conflicts.

Yes, rem out that McAfee carp. It is what is causing your boot problem. To confirm it, just use the option to step through the boot up.

I fought with this problem again yesterday (I'd forgotten that I'd had to do the samething several months ago). Couldn't find anything on the McAfee site about it either. At the time, McAfee suggested some updates. But they didn't resolve the problem.
