Sometimes you only need to enable power saving in cmos.

There are other posts where people want the system to start up at a certain time & shutdown at a later time.

Dave, you are right, an inactivity timeout can be easy to implement.

Hi ZackStorm, Sonnysandiego, DAVEINCAPS, hello everyone,

The easiest method is as stated by DAVEINCAPS, using power management in the bios to shutdown the computer during inactivity. This is if your bios has that option.

Another option is to create a batch file that is launched by Task Scheduler at a certain time.

Copy the following into notepad:

rundll32.exe shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx 1

Save the file as something like autoshutdown.bat

Now open Task Scheduler and set it to launch the autoshutdown.bat file at a particular time.

Best Regards,
Mesich

You see, I did have it all written out in detail, but my "work" was erased when I accidently refreshed the page...

I did searches, went through all of the methods, checked the CMOS, etc. Then I went to Microsoft's support website where I learned how to see if my chipset/CMOS was capatable with shuting down Win98 automaticaly. The conclusion was that my CMOS will not automaticaly shutdown Win98. It is an incapatability problem...

Thanks for the help anyway.

Hello everyone,

Don,

I believe the problem is they have an AT Power Supply and motherboard, not ATX.

The batch file above in conjuntion with Task Scheduler will work but only if the computer is ATX.

With an AT power supply there is no other option to shutdown other than pressing the power button when "It is now safe to turn off your computer", is displayed.

This is because the power supply is turned on/off throught the switch and not the motherboard.
With an AT power supply the power supply connects directly to the switch. With an ATX the switch goes to the motherboard.

Best Regards,
Mesich
