Well, My auto scandisk wont work at all. After a lock up it reboots and no scan disk. One time a while ago it did do it with a blue screen.I guess this is the dos version. But soon it went back to none at all.Now i have edited my msdod.sys.file like ive read on certain sites.By changing the value to 2 for always autoscan. But this does not help. Now ive seen it do it a few time so i know it works.lol.Is auto scandisk in 98 se supposed to be a blue full screen or is it the other scandisk? Id appreciate and input possible.Thanks-Mark.

The DOS scandisk is the one with the blue screen, which runs when you crash out and restart. It runs from the file scandisk.exe (in c:\windows\command).

The Windows scandisk is the one that pops up a smallish grey window and runs from scandskw.exe (in c:\windows). It is usually run manually when required.

My DOS scandisk runs fine if I crash out.

Checked Msdos.sys (which I've never altered) and I have AutoScan=1

I've not run into a setting of "2". I would have thought that "0" means autoscan NO and "1" means autoscan YES.

I assume this is what you mean (seems the neatest explanation):

Very odd because I don't recall a prompt, it just pops up the blue screen and gets on with it (moaning about me not shutting down correctly).

Look in \Windows\Command for a file called SCANDISK.ALT.
If it is there, delete it.

Was that in response to me???

If so, and you deleted the scandisk.alt file, you have nothing to do. On the next failure, scandisk will run. (given you didn't disable it in msdos.sys.

Teehee, youse guys!

Just to add to this, when a utility like Norton or System Mechanic is installed that has a scandisk equivalent, that EXE file is copied into the \Command folder as SCANDISK.alt.

After a bad shutdown, windows first looks for a scandisk.alt file, and if it finds it, it runs it as an EXE file. It it doesn't find it, it tries to run SCANDISK.exe.

But, sometimes after an uninstall of Norton, etc. all the key components are deleted but scandisk.alt is left behind. Now, windows tries to run it, but it refuses since pieces are missing, and windows just keeps on booting.

So, the first thing to look for is this ALT file and delete it, especially if Scandisk from dos is running OK.

Thx WhitPhil for the extra 10c worth. Hope you can keep your wistful eye on this forum - some of the best helpers seem to have done a bunk.

One day someone will write a program that when you uninstall it "everything" comes out. I'm amazed, for example, how much an on-line Panda scan leaves behind when you uninstall it (22 files for starters).

Unfortunately it seems to be the software manufacturers that don't seem to know what their products install, so that they can program that same knowledge into the uninstall side!!
