how do I stop the auto detection of hardward when my computer starts up. I don't want it to detect as I'm having a conflict with two sound cards (one is on the motherboard and the other I bought and installed) and a modem I don't want to use. Is there a buttom I can "click" to stop this annoying thing from happening? Also when I do let it set up drivers for these things, I start to have problems. My computer freezes up and I have to uninstall my drivers for almost everything and even had to reinstall windows once! Please HELP!!! I have win98se

Disable the integrated Sound Card. You should be able to do this in the BIOS.

Physically remove the modem.

That should take care of the problem.

Yeah, just use Device Manager to disable the unwanted devices in your device profile.
