I'm not sure if it's any help but the noise goes ding dong ding dong and repeats like that. it only got two different beeps that repeat in sucession(over and over).
even vauge suggestions are welcome, it's driving me mad!
Sounds like BIOS Beep codes. What type of BIOS do you have?

these beeps sound like your bios beep codes, the beeps will vary in length ie two short beeps and one long beep. By determining what beep pattern you have we can eliminate the the problems, we'd also need to know what mb you have. have you added any new hardware recently, any output to the LED on the keyboards ?

I'm shooting blind here because i don't know what bios you have.If by chance you have a fic sd-11 motherboard with amibios(American Megatrends Inc.)the fic web site lists the ami beep codes and i think a possible solution for each code.If you don't have this kind check your motherboard web site.
If you reply with the type of BIOS you have then I'll try and tell you what the beeps mean.

Would bios beep codes continue to beep non stop? Isn't that what he is saying? That the beeping doesn't stop? Or is it?
Does it only beep (for whatever number of times,i.e. a beep code) at startup and then stop? Or does it beep all the while it is on?
I thought bios beep codes were only heard when something happens before the monitor can be used to "show" error messages. He seems to have use of the computer/monitor and just has an annoying beeping. Don't know the answer but am questioning as to whether or not it's the bios.

There are a few things that can cause this. If you are using ASUS K7M Mother Board, turn OFF system temperature monitoring or upgrade the flash bios (is at1.009 now). I have a similar problem but only under Win98 not W2K, with beep from system speaker and constant tone in background. It only happens AFTER I get part way through Win98 startup. If anyone has the answer for this, email me direct. Thanks.
