I'll just dig right into my prob. I just bought a ata 100 controller card to see if this would allow me to run my Western Digital ata 100 hard drive, since my mobo has a 66 ide bus. This is not working. I have a 1 ghz duron, running win98 se, 256 mb pc100, 4x agp to 32mb. When I start up this system (new one I put together), it doesn't detect the HDD from the card, I am not even sure that it detects the card. I have the HDD hooked to the card just like my crappy instructions say, jumper settings on the card seem to be correct, what gives?
Do I have to disable the ide drives in Bios?
And when I try to boot from the cd rom, it says it says disc boot failure. Please Help. I Need all that I can get . Thanks

i have the maxtor/promise one and it at first didn't work, I had to install the software/drivers for it 1st while my harddrive was connected to the mobo, and I had to use a 80 wire 40pin connector ata100
ribbon cable, the 40 wire ribbon cable wouldn't work with it.
i think it was black to master
grey to slave
blue to controller card.

W is partially right. You do need the 80 wire cable or it will just be a 66. Also you need to set the bios boot sequence to boot from scsi. I believe a, cd rom than scsi, or a,scsi, than cd. Make sure the HD is connected to the ata card on channel 0 and jumpered to master. If no other device is connected to the ata card and on the same cable, you can leave the jumper off. Hope this helps.

What card did you pick up?

I’ve read of problems with cards sold by CompUSA.

I also have Maxtor cards. They came with great instructions. I installed them first with my original IDE/HDD setup before moving the IDEs over to the card. I DO use the 80-conductor/40-pin IDE cables. I DID NOT change my boot sequence to boot off SCSI.

Yes, I bought my card through ebay, though from all I have researched on google, it is the same as the one that CompUSA sells.
The only other question I have is, how do I tell the difference between the 40 wire, and the 80 wire, besides the obvious? Can you look at it and tell right away that it is a 80 wire? Sorry if this line of questioning sounds ignorant. Thanks.

The 80-wire/40-pin IDE cables have obviously thinner wires and obviously twice as many.

My 80-wire/40-pin cables are gray.

I have many 40-wire/40-pin cables that are also gray. The shades of gray vary.

Some of the 40-wire/40-pin cables are the same color gray as the 80-wire/40-pin cables.

Mitzi..Did you have to load the drivers for the card on your old hd before you set up the new hd on the card? Did you have to disable ide controllers in cmos before you boot up with the hd on the card?

I installed the ATA card first. The HDD with the OS was set as Master on the primary IDE of the MOBO. Then I moved the MOBO’s primary and secondary IDE cables to the primary and secondary IDE of the card.

I did NOT disable the IDEs in CMOS on my Tyan 1590S MOBOs.
