Astra 2000U Scanner Wont Work in 98SE

I have a Brand New Umax Astra 2000U scanner and am running Win98 SE, with PII350,64meg ram and a ABIT BH6 motherboard(with latest bios installed). It installs no problem comes up with no conflicts under device manager. When i run the test program it comes up with an Error 000000001 cable not conected or check cable or some such thing... the cable is fine as the scanner detects under device manager with no problems.. it just wont scan... the scanner works just fine under my other 98se box and under my mac system.... what gives ? btw umax refused to help as they dont support 98se aparently
