Do you have "Align to Grid" checked?

I'm not sure if this is your problem but ... You can adjust the spacing between icons in Display Properties/Appearance/Item window/Icon spacing.

If spacing is too close or icons are too big, they will be bunched up. My spacing is 43 for both horizontal and vertical, icon size 32. I don't know if those are default values.

jada46133, Right click your desktop and uncheck "auto arrange" then move the icons where you want them. This should solve your problem.

Right click desktop, click 'Arrange Icons by', and then click 'Arrange to grid'. I also keep 'Auto Arrange' clicked since it keeps the icons in order, but you may want to experiment with settings to see what they do so you can choose what's best for you rather than what other people may like...
