Comment:

Boot up Win95, go into any application and the sytem hangs. Hit Ctl Alt Del and get msgrsv32(not responding). End this task. Can move around for a while, but my system usually crashes or hangs and I have to cold boot. Problem started after installing Netscape 4.6 without uninstalling Netscape 4.5 first (per README.TXT).

I have:
1. uninstalled all relatively new
software, including Netscape
2. removed all startup apps
3. run scan disk, defrag and checked for
viruses
4. checked system resources (85% +)
5. started in safe mode - prob still exists
6. there is no sound card/blaster
7. ample hard disk space

Not sure how to proceed. Any suggestions??

Thanks in advance!

jim

Jim,

We were having a similiar problem with some PC's here. We are on a NT network and after a user would type in their password to login the system would sort of hang for up to 2-3 minutes. If I did a ctl alt delete at that point it would say Msgsrv32 not responding. All our PC's have McAfee. If we unistalled McAfee it would boot/login normal, so I thought it was McAfee. What it actually ended up being was that there was a set path line in the autoexec.bat file that had something to do with Compaq's DMI utility.
Reming that line out took care of the problem.

Try renaming your autoexec.bat file to soemthing else and see if the problem goes away.

I had the same problem. Running an AMDK2-400 processor and Win95 wouldn't start. In addition, my bios would hang when i tried to access the peripherals section. Since I had bought a barebones kit with the CPU installed, I figured the motherboard settings were correct. It turns out that four of the CPU selection jumbers on the motherboard were backwards. On-On-Off-Off instead of Off-Off-On-On. This fixed my problems. Check your jumper settings if you bought a clone.

First of all, i will like to thanks Jim for what he has been doing.

Well i have a very similar problem to the problem that Jim was having. The only difference between my problem and Jim is that I have win98 and that i renamed my autoexec.bat and the problem has not gone way.

I have 2 pc at home (one a PIII 500, and the other a AMD 350, both running Win98) I have gotten the same problem with both pc when installing new network cards. I have had the problem with PCI network cards and USB adapters. It seems to have something to do with the drivers but I have not been able to figure out the problem yet. I am looking for updated drivers, I have a feeling that it is not limited to just network cards that cause the problem, but I will let you know if I resolve the problem with the new drivers.

I can add to this list of problems that neither of my 2 cd-rom drivers respond when I try to read a self-recorded cd-rom.
When I press ctrl-alt-del, I get the message msgsrv32 not responding.
I didn't find a line in my autoexec.bat file that I thought to be relevant to solve this problem.

Thank you.

I have the same problem and I'm using Win98. But I think I know the solution for Win 95. Goto Control Panel and diable Power management. If that doesn't work goto advanced power management in system(under control panel) and in settings uncheck power management. I think this might work. It's worth trying it. If it doesn't I'm sorry!

Well, after browsing over this list I can only laugh! I figured I surely wasn't the only one with this problem and look, I'm not! Only I see no fix. What ever you do, do not delete msgsrv32.exe from the windows\system directory. I crashed my system and had to reinstall windows. I am still having the same problem. I think that we should shove Bill's market steeling operating system up his little geek ass!

I read in New Zealand PCWORLD magazine that the problem is caused by a virus definition in Norton Antivirus (the irony of it all). The steps they recommend are:run live update -which still doesn' seem to work for me, and visit www.symantec,com/avcenter/download.html. My best efforts still haven't so far fixed the problem, and I am not very happy!

I had the same problem and found it was related to printers. I deleted all my printers, re-booted and re-added them and it went away!

If you have a scanner, it may be a problem caused by that. Tyry unpluggung it and see what happens.
