Comment: Hi, realize this is an old and frequent issue but my apps.inf file has disappeared (checked all folders incl hidden files) and can't be found on the 98SE disk either. I'm getting error messages every 2 secs. Would someone kindly email me this file? Thanks so much.

Reply: (edit)If you get stuck I can surely email it. It is on W98SE CD though (in win98_49.cab). If Windows is working then you can type sfc in the Run box and use the "extract one file" feature. It goes in c:\windows\inf DerekW

Reply: (edit)... also there is usually a backup copy in c:\windows\inf\infback The command to replace it from a DOS C prompt (if need be) is: copy c:\windows\inf\infback\apps.inf c:\windows\inf Hit Return afterwards and make sure the two spaces are included. Sorry if you know all this.... DerekW

Reply: (edit)Hi skbreck, hi everyoneA simple search at the top right of this site for apps.inf turned up a list of hits going back from July 04, 2006 till July 25, 1999. :-O It seems that you can extract the file from WIN98_49.CAB on your Win98 SE CD-ROM by running SFC from Start => Run, or extract it with WinZip or a similar program to C:\Windows\Inf. Or keep you fingers crossed and hope someone is kind enough to email you the file. It might also be a good idea to run at least a up-to-date virusscan. Reply: (edit)If you Google for it the file the one you want for W98SE has a "modified" date of 23 April 1999. As I said, I can send it but if you can sort it out yourself it's better. Firstly it will help in the future, secondly so often I send emails and they get returned for one reason or another. The virus scan suggestion from "The Count" is well worth doing - I won't bore you will the reasons. DerekW

Reply: (edit)Hi Derek & Count, Thanks for the information and suggestions. Prior to posting I did search the site and read a large number of the previous postings on this topic and tried several of the proposed solutions, but until your responses to my question I didn't understand exactly how to find the file on the 98SE disk. (Didn't realize I had to search for a .cab file; I'm pretty ignorant of basic windows stuff!) So, thank you. I wanted to let you know at this point, I've copied the apps.inf file to the C:\windows\inf folder. I don't seem to have an infback folder (I've applied the setting to view all hidden and system files and folders), but hopefully that will not be an issue. Also, I've run a couple of virus and spyware scanners (AVG, Spysweeper) and searched for those files mentioned on the Symantec page about the W32.Stupid.D virus, but found no traces of that particular virus or any malware. We'll see if this restoration of the apps.inf file solves my problem. Thank you again for your help. Best regards, skbreck

Reply: (edit)Thanks for popping back to let us know. It is a very good idea to show all files rather than letting MS hide stuff from you, which is the default. It also improves your understanding of the meaning of file extensions. As long as you don't go around deleting files unless you know exactly what they are for then you'll be fine). We get a lot of disasters caused by that on here LOL. Good luck with it. DerekW

Reply: (edit)Hi skbreck, Derek, hi everyoneLike Derek already mentioned; "Thanks for popping back...", it's very much appreciated. skbreck, I wouldn't be to concerned about not having the C:\Windows\Inf\Infback folder. At least two of my Win98 computers don't have that folder either and are running quiet and steadily without it. I am not sure as to why it exists on other systems, reading the old posts, and doesn't show up on ours... Glad to know we have been of help to you! Thanks again for posting back. One last suggestion, take Derek's words to the heart! Take good care! Best Regards and Wishes, The Count, Co-webmaster of mesich.com
