AOL locks up Win98

Brother in law sent us new computer. A used Gateway, but strong. We hook it up last night, no internet access, bright idea: load up AOL use one month trial and download Freei or something for permanent. I install AOL,says "restart" so I restart, now it freezes right away as soon as Windows 98 appears on the screen. Any ideas? Can't even get past that screen to do anything. ctrl+alt+del just creates same problem. Thanks in advance

Pardon my ignorance; how do I get to safe mode when I reboot? Can't get past the "Win98" screen? I have to reinstall all of Win98? So basically wipe the slate clean and redo the whole thing? Thanks!

James,
Re-Boot your computer and keeping hitting F8 until a menu comes up. Select Start in Safe-Mode. Go to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and uninstall AOL.
