I recentlly tried to up-grade to the newest verison of AOL instant messenger. The up-grade didn't work and now when I go to load up it loads but no login screen appears. I tired to re-install AIM. When I did that, in the install window when the process gets to "Copying filies: C:\Windows\System\imagehlp.dll" an illegal operation message appears saying "Glj92e4 has preformed an illegal operation" and the installation porcess doesn't go any further.
I then tried to uninstall AIM when I do that I get a message saying "Can't find file 'C:\PROGRA`1\AIM\SYSFILES\AIMWDUninstall.exe'(or one of it's commponents). Make sure the pathway and filename are correct and that all required libraries are avalible."

Delete the copy of AIM you just downloaded (version 5.9) & download it again. The one you have may be corrupt. Don't overwrite it! Make sure to delete it 1st, then download it again, then install...

Hi Erin,

After the seemingly incomplete uninstall, try to go to start>run and then type 'regedit'.

And then navigate to HKEY_Current_User>Software and then delete all the instances of AOL Msgr.
And then go to HKEY_Local_Machine>Sofwtare and then delete the same instance(s).

Do lemme know if that works. Reinstallation is the last option.
Regards.

I deleted all copies of AIM and the same thing still happened in the installation process. Any other suggestions?

Anuj,
I did that. But now I still want AOl instant messenger back on my computer and I'm still getting the illegal operation messages when I install AIM after deleting it and all the instances. Any other ideas?

Aol has a tendency i find to not uninstal everything even when told to.

Check in start>control panel>add/remove programs for instances of it - then remove them.

Then check c:/program files and delete the instances in the aol folder. Check the aol downloads folder and my documents and delete from there also.

Then check C:/windows/cookies (and temp, and temporary internet, and offline pages, and downloaded program files and the start menu).

After this, check 'find files and folders' (making sure to search for all files, hidden or otherwise) and type in aim (or aolaim/aolmessenger) and delete the instances here.

Dont forget to delete your download history and empty your recycle bin. Then press ctrl+alt+del to see if it's still running. Close.

Download again (or if it was me i would clean-up and defrag first).

Aol has problems with zone alarm and spyblaster i find as well, so you might want to try disabling these and archiving them during AIM installation.

Nothing spectacular i know but i find it helps me with aol.

Did you do what I suggested? Did you go to the AIM website & redownload the program? I have it right here on my thumbdrive...it's 4.25mb in size & it's named Install_AIM.exe. Don't do the online update/install, download the "hard copy" of the program, then run the installation.

Like I tried to explain...the installation file you have now appears to be corrupt (that is, if you actually downloaded the hard copy). If you're trying to reinstall using the file you originally downloaded, delete it...don't overwrite Install_AIM.exe, delete it 1st, then download it again.

I didn't mention anything about the version you already have installed (& can't uninstall), that's a different issue. Hopefully a "clean" download & installtion of the Install_AIM program will correct any issues you're having

yes i have same problem ... only way i have found to KINDA remedy is to run version 4.5 or 4.8 of AIM - and it STINX ... i've tried everything from uninstalling to reinstalling, to deleting reg keys, to using programs to find problems with windows, and i still can't get the new version of AIM to work ... i have same trouble, when installing it pauses real long on imagehlp.dll and then the sign on screen never loads - task manager, processes tabs has an instance of aim.exe running, but not using any computer performance .... SOMEBODY HELLLP
