Antivirus Progam for Win 98 System

Comment:
My Dad has a Win '98 system and has been using NAV '04, which was Win '98 compatible.

Unfortunately, I cannot download a NAV '04 subscription renewal for undetermined reasons (I am still waiting for a reply from Symantec as to why this is).

If a NAV '04 subscription renewal is no longer available, I am faced with the problem of no virus protection.

Are there any anti-virus programs still available for Win '98 systems, either free or for sale?

NAV can be a bit of a pain to get right out of your system (it leaves files and registry entries all over the place).

Obviously use the proper uninstall and if you suspect any file as being left behind make sure you are absolutely certain what it is before deleting it (same goes for registry entries).

Re #4. Thanks for reminder/link.

Haven't used NAV for donkeys years (caused too many problems).

The most important first step when uninstalling any AV is to first disable it.

avast(avast.com )is another freebie...; excellent util - auto-updates nicely.

Prefer it to avg as I found avg less than friendly with some ME and '9x installations. No problems (thus far) with avast...

I too happily use avast! 4 Home Edition which is free.

I use it on both of my machines. One running Win98SE and the other WinXP Pro sp2.

P.S. It is my "opinion" that AVG is a good virus detection utility but due to too many posts on this website I believe it is not a good Anti-virus utility.
Too many posts stating "AVG found a virus on my computer". Makes me wonder how the virus got there without AVG jumping all over it when it was incoming.

With my Yahoo DSL, I was given (free) EZ Antivirus from Computer Associates. It runs fine on my Win98 laptops, auto updates itself, & has never (in several years of heavy porno surfing...lol) allowed a virus to invade any of my pc's or laptops. I use it with Win98, Win2K, & WinXP. I've tried a couple of freebies before (AVG was one), and although I never acquired a virus, they seemed to bog down my older systems. Used too many system resources, I guess.

EZ Antivirus is free with AT&T/Yahoo DSL, but there is a commercial version available.

Here's a link
