annoying sound during 'digital' playback

A machine-gun like noise is present during DVD playback and while playing MAX PAYNE game. Otherwise, sound is great. MP3's, wavs, RAINBOW SIX game, etc. all sound terrific! I've tried both on-board sound and a SIIG soundwave pro PCI sound card with identical results. I've toggled 3D sound on/off, and most multimedia options, including sample rate... Any ideas out there?
