Seconded, a brilliant piece of software for nothing. I resorted to this when Norton Internet Security 2003 refused to get along with some software I have and froze my system up totally.

Actually Mel, I'd recommend McAfee, it runs on low system memory, has updated features and is effective against VBS viruses, trojans as well as your everyday viruses.

AVG for background scanning.
Personally I use fprot for dos under win98. I have a shortcut to it in my context menu so I just manually scan anything I download. If you use outlook though, you could be stuffed by email virus's. I dont use IE or Outlook so fprot for dos is fine for me. And of course, it uses no resources until you run it. ..but if you forget to run it....

I've used AVG for a while now with no problems. It's free for home use.
I've also read good things about Avast. It's apparantly another free anti-virus program. You might try it if you aren't happy with AVG.
The commercial programs aren't that expensive, but they're useless unless you pay for the subscription service to keep the virus definitions up-to-date.
