You didn't mention what type of files do you opened. If you open common files like documents, spreadsheet files and your computer looks for america.exe, that means your file type asociations are messed up. You can rectify this by clicking the view on a explorer window, then folder options, then files types and scroll to all the list and find the america.exe association and delete it. So if you clicked again the same file, it will ask you for association, then select the correct program to open that file.

Hope it helps.

I was having the same prob and ran across this by D Ries @ Windows-Help.com, so don't blame or praise me:
You might look into your file association.
Are WAV files associated with SndRec?
It sounds (sorry for the pun) like some strange program, possibly downloaded or installed by someone at some time called america has overridden some of your associations.

To get SndRec to play, and assuming your sound card is working OK, which if other sounds are playing it seems it must be.
and to get SNDrec to play the way it was supposed to. you should reinstall it through the AddRemove programs in Control Panel. Go to Windows setup. Go to Multimedia. Uncheck (to delete) SoundRec. Hit apply. It will delete it.
THen go back and click on it (to install it)
It will install it and take back all the proper associations it is supposed to have.

You need your WIN95 disk handy, if you don't have the CD WIN95 folder installed on the harddrive.

Nearly every new computer installs the WIN95 CD fodler right in the hard drive now though.

Hope this helps

according to a website I found, there is no file america.exe According to the website, the problem is that we need a program called winzip. Winzip can be downloaded for free at the site www.shareware.com I went to this site and downloaded the winzip file and I have been able to open files that I couldn't before because I kept getting message america.exe not found.

I don't know if this is everyone's problem, I only know that it solved my problem. Hope this info helps.

America.exe FAQ -> THE ANSWER!!!!
I had a talk with the fine folks of tech support at AOL to get a definitive answer on this one.
Here is what happening…

First -> There is no files called America.exe so do not waste your time looking for it!

You can get this message for several reasons…

You are trying to actual open the program up via AOL and it does not know how to handle it so you
get that message. If it is truly an executable program try running it through the…

Run Command or Windows Explorer.

They have known this problem to even occur via running it through Explorer.

There also is a problem sometimes because people are trying to run the file as a program when it is really is a MIME file (MIM) or a zipped file (ZIP) .

Please read the FAQ for the MIME answer for a farther explaination as to what these files are. You CANNOT run them as a program. They have to be processed/decode first. Download a program from http://www.shareware.com/or http://www.download.com/ called “WinZip” that should take care of you, and don’t try to run the program via AOL even
After you have used WinZip. Again use Explorer or the run command.

Even if the file does end in .exe it may be corrupt or Windows just can’t run it.

All you people out there trying to find America.exe, several people have answered your problem if only you would take the time to read previous posts. There is no such thing as america.exe. To open zip files and mim files, get winzip or another of several unzipping programs available. To get winzip go to www.download.com and do a search on winzip. It's that simple, folks. After installing it, double click on your zip files and winzip will open them for you. PS: Thanks to the several of you who posted this information which noone took the time to read.

IF you read through this thread, you may know the answer. But here is the Truth:

AMERICA.EXE IS A VIRUS!!!!!

AMERICA.EXE IS A VIRUS!!!!!
AMERICA.EXE IS A VIRUS!!!!!
AMERICA.EXE IS A VIRUS!!!!!
AMERICA.EXE IS A VIRUS!!!!!
AMERICA.EXE IS A VIRUS!!!!!
AMERICA.EXE IS A VIRUS!!!!!

Hopefully this will catch someone's attention enough for you to realize, the only way to get this fixed is with an Anti-Virus program, or if you know a LOT about computers, you need to find a way to "un-associate" your EXE files from pointing to america.exe. (Registry Hack)

This Affects ZIP files and Gif Files. GET HELP from an Anti-Virus Company, and Stop Downloading Files from people you don't know! Or at least SCAN your files first before opening them. Protect yourselves!!!

From my observation, it seems you can also get the message "Windows cannot find America.exe" when you try to open an attached file that you don't have the program to support. For example:
You cannot open a Lotus file .wk4 or an Excel file .xls if you do not have these progams (Lotus or Excel)installed on your computer. In this case, winzip will not help; you must have the program installed.
(Lotus and Excel is just an example...this can also apply to attachments from Word Perfect and many other programs)
Hope this helps those that have been beating their heads against the wall trying to open documents or spreadsheets sent to them.

Much of this will have to do with downloading a file while in the aol program and then trying to open it. This is an assocation issue. You do not have the program required to open the file with. See the link below:

http://www.searchandreplace.com/decodefaq.htm

I used Altavista and searched for "america.exe aol open file" and the link above was the first link.

America.exe is just a error message no application program need to install like AMERICA.exe on your computer. That this was only inform you that the file you have downloaded on your computer is not supported to run on this application of AOL software. The reality is just no program installed on your computer that support/compatible to open that file on your computer or program available. as review the information or question above, like .ZIP that this is only means that you need to decompress this file using Winzip in order for you to have the original format of the file you have downloaded on your computer and you can ask on the sender if this send on email and also ask the site address if this downloaded on the WEB. Note that not all program installed on our computer is already available on our computer. This is happening that when we open file to our computer it recommend a program which prepare to use and only happen that once this was already open this showed as garble/unreadable. Much better is we need to know compatible program on the file we have downloaded on our computer by cheking the file extension and we have references on the WEB that will explain further about the file why we are not able to open on our computer site is < www.whatis.com > then try recall and review the information given if we already installed program that will support that file to our computer. If there is no available program yet. try install a program from where did file created and that that will resolve all our question.

Hi Judy. About your question. on the extension file of .PPS that file created on the MS Power Point program. If you have no program Power Point on this computer you are using. Try visit site address to download this application for you to open that file and not to received this messages. That only happen that .PPS file is a Power Point Slide show and if you have no program available yet on your computer you will get this messages.

To korey. If you have downloaded a .ZIP on your hard drive., That means that is not the original format of the file, means that file still a compress file. Try use Winzip on your computer for you to decompress that .ZIP to the original format of the file. Once you have decompress and have the original format of the file on your computer. From there you can easily open that file on your computer.

What the heck is wrong with you people? You all come to this site with the same problem...but all you do is complain. Very few of you actually read what some people have to say. If you just saat and read a few of these thingies, you'd be able to solve your computer problems. First of all, AMERICA.exe DOES NOT EXIST...IF YOU DO HAPPEN TO FIND IT SOMEWHERE, IT'S NOTHING BUT A VIRUS....DO N OT DOWNLOAD IT CAUSE THEN YOU'LL HAVE BIGGER PROBLEMS THAN NOT BEING ABLE TO FIND FILES. Second, if everyone would just go to WWW.SHAREWARE.COM and download WINZIP we would all just be so very happy....TRUST ME....IT WILL HELP YOU OUT WITH WHAT YOU NEED TO DO!

I had the same problem with america.exe. I downloaded WINZIP but after 21 days they pull the plug and I didn't want to cough up $70.00. I fixed the problem by using MSN Internet Explorer 5.5 which I downloaded from MSN for free. I still have AOL as my ISP and have it set in my Control Panel as the default ISP. When I go online I just go through MSN Explorer which then connects me directly to AOL. MSN charges nothing to use MSN Explorer. I have no problem opening zip files of any kind. When it finishes downloading it will ask you if you want to locate file now - just say yes and it will put the file on your taskbar so you can open it at your leisure. Hope this helps.
