Hello, A friend of mine has Windows 95 and recently installed AOL version 7. She has not been able to use E-mail or IM's. When she sends an IM, she cannot see the text she types. If someone sends her an IM, all she sees is the AOL name in the IM window, but there is no text. The same thing happens with E-mail. She uninstalled AOL and reinstalled it with Tech Support, but still had the same problem.
So, I had her uninstall, and she had version 5 and 7 listed in the remove programs list. She she had one version 5 and six version 7 listed in the un-install programs window. I had her un-install each one. I also had her go to the Registry Editor and delete America On Line from there. We rebooted, and did a clean install. She is still having the same issues. Does anyone know why she is having thses issues and what she can do to correct them?
Thanks so much, Vito

Try deleting the cookies for AOL.
AOL is a real pain to get rid of.
Jump ship. When it screws up it's a major project.

I had AOL at one time, but guess I was lucky to NOT have problems while I had it. As I recall, they suggest you not remove the older versions, but I don't know why. Was wondering if you are using a CD to install it, or downloading from the internet ?
Which version of Win95 are you using ?
I assume she had no problems with version 5 ?
What did the AOL Techs say was the problem?

Hi,
She is using the B version. Actually, this is her first time on AOL. She had WebTV and got a Gateway that had Win95 on it. The AOL software is from the CD. She said that AOL techs had her uninstall and then reinstall, but the same thing happens. I thought maybe the version of IE on Win95B and AOL is probably having a conflict. Then I thought maybe she needs the udated DirectX Drivers. I haven't used Win95B in a long time so I don't know.
Thanks for your help!

What's the B version? If AOL 5 worked for her, she should use that to connect to AOL. Once connected, AOL will update it for her automatically. I couldn't find any AOL 7 cd, so I installed AOL 5 and updated it online.

I do not believe AOL 7 is compatible with Windows 95. I know AOL 7 uses some of the APIs found in Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Explorer 6 is not compatible with Windows 95.
You can install AOL 5 or 6 from the AOL cd you have by browsing the cd and running the executable found in the correct folder.
To browse the cd:
Put in the AOL cd.
Let it autorun.
Cancel the install.
Double click on My computer.
Right click on the cd rom drive and choose explore. There will be several folders. Click on the AOL5 or AOL6 folder and run the setup program found there.
Try that and see if it doesn't fix the issue.

Girlfriend has AOL 7 on her Windows 95 and has not had a bit of trouble with it. She also had a couple of older versions of AOL on her computer that I uninstalled and after she installed version 7 and everything is still working just fine.
