I was wondering what are the major differences between AMD and Cyrix are. Which do you recomend? Is there any web site I can go to to see a benchmark or maybe one with more information? Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.

Stay away from Cyrix! AMD has a much better chip with the K6-2. The k6-3 and new K7 are even better.
The biggest benefit of AMD over Cyrix is that AMD's FPU (floating point math processor) is significantly better than Cyrix's. This is particularly important if you play games, use 3D applications, or use other non-integer math intensive programs. intel Pentium II/III and Celeron still have the best FPU in raw power. But for games programmed for AMD's 3D-Now intructions, it is a close call. The AMD K7 (Athlon) is touted as being better than even the Pentium III. It just came on the market this week, so only time will tell.
On a side note, Cyrix is no longer making CPUs. They decided to bail out of this business. So, support for their chips is gonna suck.
As far as sites, you can try:
www.tomshardware.com
www.aceshardware.comtry some links form there as well. Also try doing a web search for Cyrix benchmarks.

Howdy, I have heard of no such thing of Cyrix not making CPU's anymore but I could be wrong. The new AMD chips though have been nothing but a pain in the ass in my opinion, I would spend the few extra bucks and go with a Intel chip, the celerons are so cheap its not funny and they do perform pretty well.

excues me but in my op. INTEL is over priced and over rated. AMD makes a fine CPU but what is killing them is that they can never get there products out on time the K7 was suppost to be released 1st. Q 1999 but now it is 3rd. Q 1999, and romers have that it has been released but it has not it well not be released tell the end of the 3rd. Q 1999 MAYBE!

Howdy, I am not defending Intel but they have always had the best FPU and have been the most stable CPU on the markert. AMD does make good CPU's but have had alot of problems latley and Cryix just plain stinks in my opinion, sure the kick butt in office apps but who cares, I don't. Also, Intel is not over priced, you get what ya pay for. You can buy a IDT winchip for alot less than a Intel chip but what will give the best performance, Intel will. Again, this is not defending Intel just speaking the facts. The K7 is also shipping as of this date if my sources are correct.

National Semiconductor bought out Cyrix. National decided Cyrix is loosing the PC CPU war and decided to bail out. Here is a link to the article stating that Cyrix is out:
http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,36122,00.html
In re-reading the article, technically Cyrix/National will just pull out of the PC CPU business and National Semi.will probably drop the Cyrix name for the integrated appliance CPU line.
I agree with Kevin as far as Celeron goes. They are cheap. In fact, that's what I use. They have all of intel's compatibility, and they perform almost the same as a Pentium II of the same speed. At more than half the cost I might add.
The K7 (Athlon) while being touted as the best x86 CPU ever, is more than likely WAY out of your price range at over $500 bucks just for the CPU. More than a PIII, I believe. Also more long term info is needed on the K7 since it just came out.The other issue Kevin mentioned is "pain in the ass" for AMD. Most problems come from the motherboard quality and drivers, not the AMD CPU itself. However, you must take this into account because the two go together. As far as I have heard recently most, if not all, of the MB issues are ironed out with the latest chipset drivers from the chipset manufacturer.
AMD has addressed this with the K7 (Athlon) by making thier own chipset. The secondary MB chipset vendors like VIA and ALi will get designs from AMD so there will be minimal if any compatibility issues.
I do recommend to check out Ace's Hardware comparison of the AMD vs. intel CPU's. There is even a Cyrix comparison (if you can call it that). www.aceshardware.com
You can judge for yourself how AMD's 3D-now FPU compares with intel's raw power FPU. Choose wisely... ;)

AMD is way better than Intel because I have had 3 intel chips burn out that were not overclocked. I have had 3 AMD chips and I have not had any trouble out of them. I switched them out just to upgrade. Now cyrix beats the crap out of celeron by everything. celeron is junk and you could not give me one of them because they do not have any L2 cache

Even though you can't get a Cyrix chip anymore, I've found that the clock speeds are FASTER than a Celeron simply because the L2 cache is MISSING from the Celeron... meaning that the L2 isn't FUNCTIONING in the chip causing it to FAIL Intel QC, thus becoming a Celeron processor. However..it is true that for gaming applications the Cyrix is lame.. you better have more than a 4mb intergrated graphics card I.E. Compaq, HP, Packard Bell specials...
As far as the AMD chip, who wants to trash your motherboard to match thier socket voltages? You can NEVER upgrade to a Pentium processor if you take this option, and after owning all three of these processors, this is what you will ultimately end up doing. But for compasrison, software like Hotfax, WINDOWS, Quicken, Winamp and many other non multimedia applications, the Cyrix (IBM 6x86) is by far the best processor of the three alternatives.
