I've got the same problem as a lot of folks with the IOS/protection error with a new P5BV3+ VIA motherboard and an AMD K6-2 400Mhz CPU. I've installed Win95OSR2 from scratch on a new hard drive. I've downloaded the AMDK6UPD.EXE patch, but I cannot get Win95 to start in safe mode at all.
Microsoft's instructions to boot to the command prompt and use win/d:m to get into safe mode doesn't work either.
Has anyone seen a version of the patch that doesn't have to be run under Win95?

First, make sure you get the most recent bios for you board. Your board may only accept AMD K6-2 350 and below.
Also, I was able to run the AMDK6UPD.EXE patch without being in safe mode. A solution would be to upgrade to Win 98. You will not get a Protection Error with Win 98.

I'm just a dumb ole country boy, but usually when I build a K6-2/3 system which requires the "patch"...I'll set the CPU up to run at 300mhz or less, patch the thing, and then go back and reset the CPU jumpers to "give it the gas".
You only get the IOS Protection error above 300 mhz, and at 400 mhz it's almost impossible to get a boot-up to patch it. So underclock that thing, patch it, and kick it in high gear again.
Also, you MUST run the patch under Windows. No DOS version or anything else available !
K6-2 is a GREAT CPU !!! I got 2 of 'em.

I had the same protection error with win95 and win98 on the AMD K6 2/500Mhz. Before installing win95 I "slowed" it down to 350Mhz and ran the AMDK6UPD.EXE patch. I changed it back to 500Mhz and it works fine.

I used the same prcess for win98. When I leave the processor on 500Mhz with win98 I get the windows prtection error and the machine must be shut down.

I just figured out and succesfully installed win95 on my k6-2 500 mhz processor. I could not have done it with out this post. I didn't think of slowing down the processor to load intoe win and use the patch so after alot of frustration it works and now i'll reboot into my nice safe NT. thanks for the help

Before i installed the patch running at 300mhz it booted from the win95 init screen in just a few seconds, know running at full speed (500mhz) with the patch it takes 30-40 seconds is this normal.

i have a amd350 k6 2 processor, running windowss 95 . When I start windows i get an I.O.S errors , & windows protection errors saying i must restart my computer. I checked microsoft website & found a amd fix which I downloaded , this seems to solve the problem. Microsoft also said this problem has been resolved in windows 98, so I upgraded to windows 98 se. Only to find out this problem has come back, i went back to the website but there`s no fix for this error if your using 98, was there a bug with the amd350 k6 2 chips or is there a fix.

Please let me know this is dowin my head in

INSTALLING WIN95B WITH AMD PROCESSORS > 350MHz.
Win95 has a problem in its timing loops with AMD processors higher than 350MHz. There is an update available from Microsoft that fixes this problem, but it can only be applied to WIN95B (e.g., OSR2 and higher). IT CANNOT BE APPLIED to the original version of WIN95, nor an original version updated with SP1 (this does not make it OSR2!).

Unfortunately, Win95B must already be installed to be able to apply the Microsoft AMD/350+ patch. However, most installs of Win95 will result in a "ios.vx" error at the first re-boot during installation. Re-booting usually produces the same message. So how can Win95B be installed? There are a couple of methods:

1. Set the bus/multiplier switches in BIOS or the motherboard to a combination that yiels LESS than 350MHz speed. The result is usually shown on your BIOS screen during boot-up. I recommend settings that yield 300MHz. After successful installation of Win95B and the AMD patch, the settings can be safely restored to your CPU/BUS normal/overclocked settings! This method has been confirmed as workable.

=OR=

2. If setting a multiplier/bus combination to less than 350MHz is not an option, proceed with a regular Win95B install. When the "ios.vxd" error arises during installation, copy (see below):
- ios.vxd to \windows\system\vmm32;
- esdi_506.pdr to \windows\system\iosubsys
- scsiport.pdr to \windows\system\iosubsys
- and rename rmm.pdr in \windows\system\iosubsys to rmm-old.pdr.

The above files are in the amdk6upd.exe package available for download from Microsoft. What you will have to do is download ahead of time, and extract the files (using WinZip, etc.) to a floppy so that they are available to copy. A re-boot after the "ios.vxd" error, with F8 pressed when the "Starting Windows" line appears, will produce a menu. Choose the "Command Prompt" option, then copy the above files at the C:> prompt. Format is, for example:
copy a:\ios.vxd c:\windows\system\vmm32

After all the files are copied, you can boot to safe mode by typing win /d:m

I have not fully tested the second method so, if you have the option, use the first method.

Also, for those with Super 7 boards and AMD K6, K6-2 or K6-3 processors, this is the install sequence I use to update Win95B to current status after Win95B has been successfully installed:

- apply the USBSUPP.EXE 1 and 2 upgrades (for USB and AGP base support);
- apply the AMDk6UPD from Microsoft (if you don't have an AMD processor, then apply remideupd.exe from Microsoft; I have always used the AMD update for all chipsets/processors, without problem);
- apply the chipset-specific .INF update, since Win95 knows nothing about VIA, ALI, Intel TX/LX/BX/810/815, etc boards. Intel has an (.inf updater) version at its website, VIA (4 in one) at its website, etc. Note: you may first have to install an extraction program like WinZip to deal with some of these updates.
- apply the Microsoft A5318.exe update (to upgrade the LPT: code);
- apply the Winsock 2.2 upgrade from Microsoft;
- apply the MSDUN 1.3 upgrade from Microsoft;
- there is also a Winsock/MSDUN Y2K update available from Microsoft - apply this;
- apply the general Win95 Y2K update from Microsoft.
- at this point I usually install MSIE 5.01SP1 and the other goodies/applications.

When this is finished, you will have a fully Y2K-compliant, up-to-date system that is very stable and fast, and even able to run Microsoft's WinMedia 7 player!!

Enjoy.

I have an AMD K6-2 350MHz processor runnig Windows 95, whenever I turn on the computer I get various error messages appearing:
"While initializing device NTKERN:
Windows Protection error. You need to restart your computer",
I restart the computer and go into "safe mode", only to be greeted with:
"HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory at address 00E0040A XMS driver not installed" after it has told me:
"Windows XMS driver Version 3.95
Extended Memory Specification (XMS) Version 3.0
Copyright 1988-1995 Microsoft Corp."
then it goes on to say:
"HIMEM.SYS is missing
Windows has stopped"...
How can it be missing if it has just detected unreliable memory?
I've tried the patch in
"command prompt only":"AMDK6UPD.EXE", only to be told :
"This program cannot be run in DOS mode"
Is there anything else I can do to get this computer working again (I can't take the back off of the computer because the person that put the screws in did them up so tight that if you try to undo them you just Knacker the screw head because the screws won't even turn!)
