When running Windows 98 with this thing, I experience several different times a lock-up. I took it to the local shop, and they changed the memory, suggesting that was the problem.
I just started it up as I had time tonight, and it's still acting up.

Facts of life for ya there Matt...
Windows is unstable. It does this often. Nobody escapes the lockups of Windows. It seems to me like power-users (unless you're an old person who eats dinner at 4:30 pm and is in bed by 8, you are a "power-user") have more problems. I think this is because they are more likely to install utility programs, etc. Also, if you have anything running in the tray, that increases the risk of a crash. Consider switching to NT or a unix/linux/BSD operating system, because they never crash (and "never" is not relative, it's definitive)!
Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Nice to here that someone else has the same problem. I have tried many things to se if there would be any difference. I changed graphics card, processor to 400 AMD, and I put in a better CPU fan, but when I changed the graphics card thats when the system was running stabile. I had a Diamond Stealth 540 with the Savage4 chip 32 MB and I changed card to Creative Savag4 32MB card and it works fine now.

For the 450 the problem is just overheating. Try to buy a new heatsink or fan, or both. If you cant fina any big enough, try to clock the 450 to 400. It will work then. The AMD's processors are overclocked already when you buy it.
And there's a timing problem when running
AMD k6-2/400 and Windows 95 together. Then the system shows a message like "IOS crap...". But this is Microsofts faults and not AMD's. You can download a patch from Microsofts homepage, or better, upgrade to Win98, where the problem is solved.
If you don't see the IOS crap, just clock the processor down one step and see.

I've been told that you should switch off the APM that is reducing power to an unwanted value for the AMD processor... Since I did it, it's OK.

I have a AMD k6-2 450 myself and am running windows 98. I have had the same problems. I talked to Microsoft Premier support and they had my reinstall. However, I had to deactivate my interal and external cache in order to install it correctly. It runs great now.

Since i purchased my AMD 450 chip yesterday, i've been having problems installing Windows 95. I get, "Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer." I tried looking for a patch on the AMD site, but nothing is found. Do i HAVE to upgrade to Windows 98 to resolve the problem?

I am using k6-450 with win98 and facing "Invalid VxD dymanic Link call from VMM (01) _0000B24C to device 43E3 service EZ77" problem after every 30 min. Needs to reboot system every time. Using Asus P5A board with 64 MB 100MHz RAM. Can anybody suggest a solution.

Ramesh, I have the same VMM error (usually
crashes in Netscape or MSIE). I believe these
are due to CPU overheating, like response #4 mentions, when I look in BIOS I find the
CPU temp to be 154-158F. I usually have RC5
cracker running in background, which keeps
the CPU 100% busy doing number crunching; when I disable that program, the errors do not come up and the CPU temp drops to ~150F.
I am going to complain to my manufacturer but
probably buy a new heat sink/fan combination
since they probably won't do anything for me
without having me ship the whole unit back
or something ridiculous (they told me "your
kernel is probably corrupt, reinstall
Windows," how *$&^ing worthless).Try disabling any applications that place full demand on the CPU, if you have any.

One of the main problems is that AMD processors above 350MHz use a 100MHz front side bus. Windows 95 cannot cope with a bus higher than 66MHz without the patch from AMD. If you cannot start the machine, then drop the bus to 66MHz, and start the machine, run the patch under windows (It won't run under dos) and then Shut down, restore the 100MHz speed, and then you will have no probs. If you need this patch and cannot find it on AMD's website, email me.

I recently had an overheating problem with my AMD K6-2 450 mhz. The processor was reaching temps up to 130°F and crashing. I bought a new fan and heat sink and that seems to work better. Temps around 120°F. Is this cool enough for my processor to work ok? and if it is could I have damaged my processor at 130°F? My computer still freezes sometimes but seems to be running better. Any comments very welcome.

I have a K6-3-450 with the ALI chipset. I had it built with the Nvidia TNT2 chipset, and suprisingly enough it was locking up a lot. The local shop said the video card wasn't good for the motherboard (yet they sold me it) and then I kept it for a year... Now I see new nvidia drivers, I install them, and the system blew up. I have all kinds of errors. I get vxd errors to the point I am ready to just buy a new MB and get rid of the AMD K-3 which looks like the industry never really supported. I can't even reinstall windows without vga.drv crashes and all kinds of garbage. I think I will buy a new CPU fan and see where it gets me, but I am tired of this! (I even bought a ATI voodoo3 32mb agp card, and it crashed with it too! HELP!

The following combination is (often) instabil:
K6-2 (for example 450 MHz)
+ TNT2 (NVIDIA, Viper, ...)
+ Motherboard with Ali-Chipset (Ali Aladdin V, for example in Gigabyte GA-5AX, ...).
This problem is frequently been discussed in the internet. Sorry, I haven't links for you at the moment, but there are many about the problem ...
