AMD K6 450 and IOS - What do I do?

Hello.

I found this message (windows95-16112)which was posted on www.computing.net on July 11, 2000 regarding AMD K6 450 MHz problems in relation to Windows 95:

"One of the main problems is that AMD processors above 350MHz use a 100MHz front side bus. Windows 95 cannot cope with a bus higher than 66MHz without the patch from AMD. If you cannot start the machine, then drop the bus to 66MHz, and start the machine, run the patch under windows (It won't run under dos) and then Shut down, restore the 100MHz speed, and then you will have no probs. If you need this patch and cannot find it on AMD's website, email me."

Because of my English-language regarding to PC´s, I am not sure if I understand it 100%!

How - and where do I drop the bus to 66MHz?

Where do I find this patch - and how do I install it, when it doesn't run under DOS and when I am not able to enter Windows 95?

My idea is to install Win95 on my girlfriends PC, which an AMD K6 450MHz, and then to install a Win98 Upgrade.

And my problem is, that I do constantly recieve a message about "IOS"-problems when I do the installing process, whereafter I will have to restart the PC, for only then getting back to the "IOS-problem".

I would therefore appriciate if somebody could help - both with the understanding, how I drop the bus, where I find the patch and how I do the installing process for the patch (in which order I do what).

Thanks a million times in advance!

Sincerely yours,

Sadolin,

Here is the patch.

WIN95 AMD K6 350 AND ABOVE PATCH

Turn off the internal cache in the bios.
Might be called level one cache.
Download and install the patch.
Reboot and take the internal cache back to original setting.

Also only version B of Win95 or later is required to run an AMD K6 350Mhz or faster.
If you have Win95 ver. A this will not work.

Good Day!
Mesich

Hi Mesich.

Thanks for your advice. As you know, one question do not often come alone, therefore I have these questions for you?

How can I see if I have a Windows A, B or later version?

What is it exactly the "IOS" do? I have noticed that there are several kinds of ios.files.

What is it exactly the patch does, and is Windows 95 or the AMD-processor who is causing the problem.

And last question: All this happend after I installed 2x32 MB SDRAM on her PC. She allready had a 1x64 MB SDRAM. Can that had have any influence on way the IOS-problem started at first?

WIN95 and WIN95B have trouble initiating when CPU speeds are 350MHz or higher. The patch is for the OS. The patch must be installed while in WIN95 or WIN95B so you must clock your CPU below 350MHz to install it. If your multiplier is 3.5, any bus speed below 100MHz will give you a CPU frequency that the WIN95 OS will initiate with. Once the patch is installed, you can clock the CPU back up to 350MHz (or sometimes higher).

I don’t readily have a url for this but WIN95B will have 4.00.950 B when you right click on “My Computer” and select “Properties”.

hello there
you say on your post that you only want to load windows 95 to load windows 98 upgrade.
Why do you care if windows 95 does not load properly? just load it, then when it crashes, boot your pc with a windows 98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com. Then after your cd-rom is recognized, type at command prompt d: (enter) then type setup (enter). This will load windows 98. Change d: for the letter of your cd-rom drive. And don't forget to load the windows 98 disk into the cd-rom.
hope this helps

this is if you decide to load windows 95 and not to load windows 98
1.- load windows 95
2.- after your installation crashes, boot your pc in safe mode by pressing f8 several times before the windows 95 splash screen appears
3.- after your pc loads in safe mode, load the file the kind gentlemen pointed out on the previous posts
4.- reboot your pc

Hi Badboy, Dude and Mesich,

Thanks a lot adding on to each others explanation. All this stuff is - if you are not used to it - a little difficult to understand, but you have helped a lot to made this a lot more understandeble for me.

How do I know? I have done it!!
AMD k6 II 400 mhz does that make any difference so you can not do it on a AMD k6 II 450mhz?
I thought that the patch was for 350 mhz and above

Well dude, then there must be something different about our systems. I apologize for calling you a liar.
I’ve done it 3 times with Tyan 1590S MOBOs and WIN95B (4.00.950 B). The first was a fresh K6-400MHz install. The other two were upgrades from K6-300MHz that got cooked from overclocking. I always get “Windows protection error IOS …” before I can get to safe mode. My way around it is to clock the CPU at 300, install the patch, and then bump the multiplier to 4X to get to 400MHz. I gave up overclocking after the second CPU burnout.
I wonder if there is something different in the BIOS of my MOBO from yours.
Peace!

alright, sysoft sandra reports that I have an Acer BIOS, and just now surfing through the IBM website I found the jumper diagram for my system board, 2158. Yes, it seems that I can now change the bus speed to 66mhz and put different microprocessors (all AMD) from 333mhz to 500 mhz. While experimenting with windows 95 on this system, I never got the IOS error message, just the "General Protection Fault -- System Halted" message after loading windows 95. But I was able to boot in safe mode and load the patch for windows 95. I do not know why you were not able to boot in safe mode. Anyways, I was able to load windows 95 and find the drivers for all the devices. I also tested it with windows 95 version upgrade, as far as I can remember I was still able to boot in safe mode too, however, I can't remember what the error message said when doing a regular boot. OK I hope I helped Sandolin, but I realize that every system is different and that my advice may not work on his system, your advice could be the solution. Cheers
