I've installed spiderbite so as to remove index.dat.files. Bought this Pc from a friend but I don't want any files that he may have left, on the HD. I also downloaded an index.dat viewer from the internet.
I can surf the net no problem,... so, as a test, I visited various sites for about 1 hour and then closed my browser. I ran index dat.viewer and loads of url's showed up as you would expect. I then did this,(there is a shorcut to internet properties on my desk top)
Delete files ,clicked
Clear history,clicked
settings, clicked,
view files,clicked
I then deleted everything in the temporary internet files and everyting disappeared ok.
I then ran index.dat.viewer and everything had gone except this http//www.iechannelguide.com.

This is when I ran spiderbite, it also showed www.iechannelguide.com but would not remove it. Then I ran the program to remove it. I thought index.dat files could not be removed by using delete temp files, clear history, & remove files. but the index.dat viewer clearly showed that I had.

Is the index.dat.viewer lying to me & spiderbite lying to me ? (My PC shuts down & reboots as normal as spiderbite states it will), or is this software just taking up space on HD?
I regularly run .. Norton Anti virus, Spybot Search & destroy, adaware & CW shredder, No problems found. Im just trying to find out if I am actually deleting the index.dat files or not.
Any comments would be appreciated.

Using the IE function to Clear Internet Files works, the majority of times.
But, if you stop a page from loading, or IE dies or hangs, or the PC hangs, the index files get out of step with real life. Then, the clear will not get them all.

Go to C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 and right click then click properties and see the size of that folder.

You can just right click the folder and delete it and it will rebuild the folder.

When you delete it out of the Recycle Bin it will tell you you can't do it, but close the RB and look back again and it will be gone.

I do this on a regular basis.

Read the free program Delindex from.....
http://www.burzurq.com/forum/delindex.html

This gets rid of index.dat files and more.

Index.dat files can't be removed from within Windows. They must be removed from DOS. Spider & Delindex both can remove them, but they do this at reboot, before loading Windows.

If you choose to use Delindex (a very good program by Renaisance Man), be sure to read up on it. It will delete files that you may not want deleted, such as emptying the recycle bin, removing Temp files, etc. Temp files are often used to update system files at reboot, when installing software. If you configure Delindex (or similar programs) to run automatically at bootup, you may need to disable them when installing new software (or Windows Updates).

G'day all, the best way to 'delete' the index.dat's is to emtpy your TIF, Cookies, and History first, reboot and either using a batch file such as Delindex or your own batch file or manually delete them from DOS.

These files will return [recreated] anew, that is empty and will be written to all over again with new info from your next surfing session.

The file Wininet.dll is the responsable file that creates the index.dat files [and cookies and also the cache folders] and as that file itself is needed you cannot actually permanently delete them....unless you are me.

I actually once wrote out the Index.dat line from this file and nothing went into any of the cache folders, not even cookies but everything still worked okay, even cookie required sites still worked.

These days I have renamed these files with a different extension inside Wininet.dll using a Hex editor [I have mentioned this so many times before here] and have had no problems.

SpiderBite is removing the index.dat and it is correctly being rebuilt upon startup including the iechannelguide url.

After mine gets rebuilt the index.dat file is 48kb in size and contains several more url's than just the iechannelguide.

Things are working as they should be.

You can get it to rebuild without the iechannelguide but I presently do not recall how to do so (just woke up and have not finished my coffe yet). Someone else may know off the top of their head. Either way, I would not be concerned about that url.

I have to agree with Ronnie Ratt. I use spider bite but about once a month I go into MS-DOS mode and delete both index.dat files. Even though spider bite cleans them the size of the files seems to grow rapidly so I just delete the whole deal.
