Actually, Stuart, a a company gives you, the employee, NO guarantee or right of privacy, and companies monitor many, many things about employee's all the time.

I agree, it's disgusting.

I have been asked to do this, cause I have been hearing rumors that some people are sending important .vbs files over AIM... If they are talking about personal stuff, i'm not going to watch, cause it's non of my business.. Someone reccomended I should do this.. If theres a better way, then just let me know.. But, those .vbs file are not supposed to be sent out, cause they are unreleased software...

I can understand a company monitoring emails because emails have a legitimate business use. I cannot see where there is a legitimate business use for AIM. AIM is for idle chatter. Entertaining at times, but not a business activity.

If the company wants to stop employers using AIM to send out restricted files, stop them from using AIM. It's easy enough to do! Allow then to use AIM and you are saying its OK to use the companies resources for idle chatter.

I don't think Hakemon has been assigned the task of determining what or how the company s/he works for should be conducting their business practices.
I do believe s/he was assigned the task of determining if anyone is sending out unreleased software by way of sending .vbs files using AIM.

I can provide information for the correct way to load a clothes washer but that has nothing to do with what Hakemon has inquired about either so I won't.

So, StuartS, can you offer any input to the posters request or not?

I can't.

Bryan

If I'm not mistaken, AIM builds it's own log and records every conversation.

I am not at my home computer, but I onced e-mailed AOL and they sent me directions on how to open/delete the log and all those chats in Word Pad.

Try contacting AOL. I wish I had the directions here, but I don't.

Hey all,

No, AIM does not keep a log file, nor is there logging as an option. Yahoo messanger does have this ability. Any how, I come across this program, as an option. It's called: "Instant Message Grabber 2.0" by a company called BitSplash. Cost is like 20 bucks, which I guess really isn't that bad compared to other programs I've seen.

It can be found here,

Or the companies homepage is here:

Hope this may be of some help, otherwise you would only have limited option if not.

I use AIM as part of business, it 'can' be a very usfull workplace tool, just as e-mail is.
Any privately owned company has the right to monitor employee actions in the workplace. For both, making certain employee's aren't into illegal things, or that they are not utilizing company time for personal business.

From the same link that Sean provided where one of the reviewers suggested; why use that when you can get 3 others for free: Gaim, Middle Man and AIMutation.

"Middle man" seems like a good idea because it is a plugin to AIM versus a replacement that has logging capabilities.
