Hello ladies and gents!

Would like some advice please. I am being bullied by my brother to let him use my PC for music downloads etc. I understand that most file sharing software is potentially dangerous so am trying to weigh up the risks!
Have heard about kazaa-lite here a lot recently and have seen another similiar software called imesh.
Does anyone here use them and could offer advice?
I do not want my PC to be full off spyware or worse, a virus. And I really dont like the idea of ppl having access to my hard drive. I would rather keep private and personal stuff private and personal!! Dont want them flying around in cyberspace!
How do you other security concious / conspiracy theorist's deal with this??!

I do have up to date virus software but do not have a firewall or any other means of protection.
I am also considering a move over to an ADSL connection.
Basically I need more info before my dear brother screws my system.
Recommendations and advice plz ppl.

Thanks Ahsan. I have Norton Anti-virus Corporate Edition. 2000 I think it is, version 7.60.926.

I want to use this software like kazaa but not if it means risking my PC and privacy. And I really do not want to get bogged down with spyware!

Supporting the bands, is alot safer
than virus swapping.
Buy the music, or save the money for
your new computer.

If you can remove a virus, not dectected
by Norton go for it.

Every other week, at least one new Kazaa virus.

Just my two cents worth. Kazaa lite still loads unwanted stuff on your drive, I found that out when I loaded it to use in conjunction with WinMX. WinMX is the best IMHO ... no spyware, no junk. You can download WinMX at www.winmx.com.

all I know is what I saw at a friends computer: a mp3 file with a virus in it, also incomplete downloads contained viruses.

so anyway, check for viruses before playing them: I doubt you can get your brother to do so after every download...

I have used Kazza, winmx and Imesh for 3yrs. now problem free. In kazaa there is a setting to disable file sharing or you could just not put any music in the shared file folder instead just download the music to a folder and don't list it to share. I found that by running spybot and removing all the spyware these programs still function fine for me with no problems.

Thanks all. Mary you answered what I was hoping for! Disable file sharing and download only!! In this instance I will take but not give!!

Any problems and my bruv will find himself begging to be allowed within ten feet of it.

Cheers for all your comments.

RE: what minds eye posted.

Either way.. if your going to "share" files you can forget about security. The question you must ask yourself is.. "Am i willing to deal with possible/probable virus infection for a few files?"

If the answer is yes.. install whatever you want and enjoy [until you lose all your media to infection that is.. fun while it lasts?]. If the answer is no.. order your music from amazon.

To SMUOD
I agree that you always compromise security when sharing files. What I was meaning is that WinMX compared to the others doesn't load the spyware and junk on your system. I do run an up to date virus scanning program to help anything that might come in uninvited. I do have a firewall but I have to disable that to download but once I am done it goes back up. I also run AdAware once a week just to make sure nothing is there that's not supposed to be there. I keep my system as clean as I possibly can. Just my two cents worth.
