My friends all drive Porches,

Oh Lord, wont you buy me,
A Mercedes Benz....

If you open the quick launch toolbar at the bottom of your screen you can add program icons in there as shortcuts.

Right click on the Taskbar, wave over Toolbars and then select QuickLaunch.
You can drag shortcuts to it.

Another way is to create a new folder and call it 'Shortcuts'
Right click and drag your .exe files to it and select Create Shortcut here.

Then right click on the Taskbar, wave over Toolbars and select New toolbar. Navigate to that new 'Shortcuts' folder and select it.
The new Toolbar will be large. Go to the left edge of that toolbar, click and drag it all the way to the right next to the System tray. You will then only see the word 'Shortcuts' and a double vertical arrow. When you click on the double arrows a popup will list all of your shortcuts.
When you add shortcuts to the 'Shortcuts' folder they will automatically show up in your new toolbar.

With your machine you do not want many things starting up and showing in your system tray for reasons that you are already aware of.
