I am trying to add a usb printer to a older system.

I added the printer using the START -SETTINGS - ADD PRINTER option.

I then used the driver downloaded from the site. I could not use the disc that came with the printere as I do not have a cd rom on this old 133 laptop.

So, I have added it and when I right click on the printer icon, in the list of printer ports, there is no usb option.

I know that the usb does work , as I use my joypad to play atari emulator games port.

Well, anywho, if there is a way I would be interested.

Install the correct drivers for the printer before connecting the printer. Then shutdown and connect the printer and restart. If you already have that printer showing in add printers then remove it before rebooting.

I'd think the USB printer would be PnP and you wouldn't have to go through the ADD PRINTER routine. You should have gotten a 'new hardware found' message the first time it was connected. Are you sure the printer is good?

Most USB printers/scanners/all-in-ones require the software installation first. Then, the device is attached when the message is displayed to do so. After that process is complete, the printer will be listed in the printer folder.

What make/model of printer is it?

Life's more painless for the brainless.

It is a new printer and I know that it works well with my newer laptop.

I thought that I would grab this old clunker out and make use of it as I use the new one mostly for N64 emulator games and it is convenient to use one to play and one for the walkthrough.

I thought that I might try to hook this old laptop to the new all in one Brother MFC 5440CN printer just for the heck of it.

I am not too technical, but it was pretty easy to install using the new computer. This printer has a usb or network cable connection so if I can't get the usb to work then hopefully if I ever upgrade my computer stuff, I might be able to get it to work with the old laptop using a network connection.

Does it need USB 2.0? Or does it have minimum CPU, RAM or OS requirements that your laptop doesn't meet?
