It sounds like you didn't plug power into the 2nd HD. Both hard drives need to be plugged in to have power.

Signal connector in upside down?
Bent pin in the signal sonnector or pushed in pin in the power connector?
Check the slave plugging 2-3 more times.

Signal plug has 5 pins slave is the 3rd one over anyway you look at it up side down backwards side ways it dont matter its set to slave. there are no bent pins and ive checked the plugging way more than that. I know this Hd is good because i had it running in another computer when i pulled it with win98 running on it when in the other computer it was set to the J8 setting for master all i did was switch it to slave so i can fdisk it then format for extra space any other ideals

How about removing your current master drive,
set other drive as master (Temporarily only)install it as master.
boot system with 98se start up floppy and run Fdisk/format drive to prepare it. Then reinstall master (as master). Set & install slave as slave. Recheck status on system.

I know, it's the long way around

Depending on the brand of your second hard drive I'd go to their web site and get a copy of the installation software like Disk Go or EZ Install. I've found they are a whole lot easier to use then fdisk and will do exactly what your trying to do.

The bestwayI've found to wipe a HDD clean is with Autoclave, which can be found here: http://staff.washington.edu/jdlarios/autoclave/install.html

Use fdisk and remove all the drives and then all the partitions. Then repartition and format it.

I would do as DDS stated and place the hard drive you want to partition and format in the computer alone as a Master.

Boot with a Win98 bootdisk.

Delete any Logical Drives in the Extended Partition if they exist.

Delete the Extended Dos partition if it exist.

Delete the Primary Dos Partition.

Create a new Primary Dos Partition then format it.

Place the other drive back in the computer as the Master and the newly formatted one in as the Slave.
