I know this is probably going to sound like a dumb question, but I would appreciate any replies.
I do a scan everyday with my Ad-Aware. And everytime I do one there are truly over 125+ suspicious components there, Now, my question...
Can anyone tell me what the following are? They are on there everyday...
Gator
Ezula
Alexa
BonziBuddy

I am just curious, and thank anyone that replies!

GAtor is a sotware that will remember your passwords and usernames so when you return to a site where that information is needed, it will fill it automatically. Personally I would consider this a security risk because that information gets saved on your hard drive and anybody with hacking software can access this information. BonziBuddy is an annoying little program that adds itself to your Internet Explorer and at times hard to get rid of.

Hi Viv..

You might also try using the program called 'spider', available Here .

It is somewhat more aggressive than Ad-aware, and does a great job!

They're all basically spyware, some with dubious benefits. Also sound like they're re-installing themselves, which is annoying at best.
Try SpyBot (http://spybot.safer-networking.de/), it's slightly better than ad-aware, it will eliminate pretty much all such programs, and it's free.

this may sound like a dumb answer, but do you hit the button "Continue" after scanning? And if so, do you check the boxes that appear in the next part? And do you hit the button "Continue" then? Then press OK.

Right click in the window and click "select all", then let AdAware remove all those components. They are likely slowing your system dramatically.

I am very suprised you get that many Spyware files in a single day! That Spyware crap can devour your system resources, collect info from your computer and send it out to marketing companies, and can be a pain to get rid of. Here are some additional tips/thoughts:

Do you download a lot of free software? Many "free" programs contain Spyware components so the software author can get a kickback from the advertising companies. A companion program to Ad-Aware is Ad-Search. It contains a list of software titles known to contain Spyware. Check this list before downloading "free" software and compare it with software you have installed.

Good freeware sites do *not* distribute spyware. Here are a couple of top-quality freeware sites: Son Of Spy Freeware, OnlyFreeware, FreewareHome, and NoNags. These are highly-respected sites that do not list shareware or spyware, only software that is truely free. For every Spyware program, there is almost always a true freeware program of equal quality and ability.

If you delete the Spyware component, but leave the parent program, the software will often not run. Delete the entire program that contained the Spyware and look for a replacement.

Do you share files over the internet (peer-to-peer)? If you use Kazaa, you are using Spyware. KazaaLite has the exact same capabilities, minus the spyware.

If you somehow can't find a suitable replacement, a firewall will prevent the Spyware from sending marketing info from your comptuer to online websites. You do have a firewall, right? If not, I recommend ZoneAlarm or Kerio Personal Firewall. Both of these are free for home use and very reliable.

My main problem with spyware is honesty. Often the information about what the marketing companies do is hidden deep in liscense agreements that many people do not read. Sometimes there is no consumer info at all. Sometimes the software is capable of doing *much* more than the companies admit, and sometimes companies are caught red-handed using these capabilities.

Even some store-bought software collections contain Spyware!

Best Wishes,
Bob

It seems that BonziBuddy can be tough to remove. Here's some help:

Thanks to Terri for this

I closed out the banana on the task bar. Then I closed out the dollar sign on the task bar. Some people say it is just an S but it is a $. Now go to control panel/add remove programs and choose Bonzi Buddy/remove.

Next an option will apear to:
repair the program
Automatic uninstall
Custom uninstall

Choose Custom uninstall. With each of the next screens a box will appear with the files in it from the program. You can select certian ones to delet or under the box is a [select all] button.

Keep choosing the select all button then hit next until you get to the button: [finished].

Just to add that Spider (which was mentioned in #2 as being more aggressive) clears your TIF's, cookies, history and some hidden stuff in index files. Quite useful but it does not search for "spyware" which is what your post listed.

Ad-Aware & Spybot do this.

Derek

You can prevent a lot of those in your list from ever being installed in the first place by using a freeware program called SpywareBlaster. Get it here:

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/spywareblaster.html

When you run it, it shows a list of spyware, but that does not mean those are on your computer. Those are the things it will protect you from getting. Select all of them then click the protect against checked items button. The program is updated often, so check weekly at least for updates, as it adds to the list of nasties you are protected from.

I will reply in order that the posts appeared.
1st off, thanks to all of you that gave me all this great information and for taking time out to reply!

Solo- Thanks for the "spider" info, I will check into it ASAP.

Piagi- Thanks for the "spybot" link, I might change from AdAware.

Ding- The answer to all your questions is "yes."

Dave- Thank you. I will do.

Bobthearch- I don't download too much free software. No sharing of any files at all. Never went to "kazaa" in my life. Yes, I do have "zone alarm", always did. I even up-graded it just recently. Thank you for the freeware sites!

Will- There is no banana on my taskbar and no dollar sign. I did once download "Bonzi buddy", but quickly removed it in my control
panel add/remove. I hated it.

Suzi- Thanks for the "spyware blaster", I will do it ASAP!

Once again, thank you... to all of you! I will take all your advice!
