I've been having a lot of truble with my slimstar scanner. When I turn it on it makes
a ticking noise and if I unplug it two or three times the noise stops but it wont go through a scanner test. What should I do?

I have same exact problem as paul. My slimstar scanner makes sounds like its trying to work but it won't scan in win98. It would help if www.adara.com was up (hopefully it will be back online real soon!) If someone has updated drivers for the slimstar, i would be grateful if you sent them to me by e-mail.

I have a SlimstarII. I had the same problem that most of you seem to be having. About 3 months ago I went to the Adara site and down loaded new drivers. THE SCANNER WORKED! Since then, though, my hard drive crashed and new drivers were lost. I tried to go back to the Adara web site, (www.adara.com). The site would not come up. I also tried going to www.adara.com/tech/install/mmedia_pc_tb.html
That site will not come up either. The search says site cannot be displayed, hit the refresh button or try a different site.
Starting to wonder if Adara exists as a company anymore.

It seems like we all have a similar problem with drivers for updating to Windows 98 for the Slimstar Scanners. Although I had downloaded the driver for my Slimstar 1, I have since bought a new PC and now that I need it again, the Adara site is no longer there. If there is anyone out there with a copy of the driver PLEASE contact me... your help will be tremendously appreciated.

(As of 2/9/2000)

TO ALL ADARA SCANNER OWNERS:

Adara's website disappeared this past summer, leaving everyone to wonder if the company had gone out of business. Apparently it has, but not in a way that hurts Adara scanner owners. Microtek has acquired Adara.

Sadly, at this writing, there is not so much as a mention of it on either of Microtek's websites, though when you try to go to Adara's site, you are taken to a Microtek site. There are two Microtek sites... one at www.microtek.com (Microtek's original site) and another at www.adara.com (Microtek's site that is currently under construction).

Microtek was always a bigger company than Adara, but both of them OEMed scanner engines from the same overseas suppliers. Therefore nearly all Adara products correspond with one model or another of Microtek product. For example, the Adara Starlight-1 is the same scanner, internally, as the Microtek Scanmaker V310-EPP. Therefore, virtually anything written on the Microtek website about the V310-EPP would apply to the old Adara Starlight-1 model.

The original AdaraScan software that came on the original CD with the Adara scanners is no longer available. However the Microtek ScanWizard software will work with the Adara scanners. And, according to Microtek's tech support, the Microtek Scanwizard software eliminates the need for any special drivers or patches in order to make the Adara scanners work -- as was the case with several of the models when using the original AdaraScan software. I have yet to install the ScanWizard (though I'm about to) so I don't know yet if that's true. But Microtek's tech support assures that if you have an Adara SCSI (or EPP parallel port) scanner, then the Microtek ScanWizard software is all you need to make the scanner work. It's downloadable for free from the Microtek website at:

http://204.31.16.250/~admin/index.html

Any *other* scanner software that might have been included on the original CD which came with an Adara Scanner (such as OmniPage-LE OCR software, or iPhoto-Express or iPhoto-Plus) can be obtained from Microtek by purchasing the CD which they send out to people who have discontinued scanners, but who need the original CD. It costs $29.

Or, if you need decent OCR software for free, you may wish to try wOCaR by French software author Cyril Cambien. It's free and it's fairly full-featured -- certainly on par with OmniPage-LE version 5.0, which is what used to come on the Adara scanner CDs. Check out wOCaR at:

http://personoweb.francenet.fr/~cambien

As for a substitute for the uLead iPhoto Express or iPhoto Plus software (graphics and painting software) I have no suggestion for anything free. iPhoto is a pretty good product and nothing on the Internet (that I'm aware of) for free can match it. I personally don't like it. It's too "friendly" for me and doesn't boast the kind of professional user interface for graphics software that I like. Of course Adobe Photoshop is the king. But who has $500 for that? So I strongly recommend PaintShop Pro from JASC software. It's around a hundred bucks but in its price range it has no rival -- no matter what Adobe software lovers say! Check out PaintShop Pro version 6 at:

http://www.jasc.com/psp6.html

Or, Windows 3.x users, check out PaintShop Pro version 3 for $69 at:

http://www.jasc.com/psp3.html

With the ScanWizard from Microtek, wOCar OCR software, and some kind of graphics painting and manipulation program, you'll have the equivalent of pretty much everything that normally came on the old Adara CDs. Perhaps you know of a free graphics program that would be a good substitute for the iPhoto software. Check out www.nonags.com and see you you can find something.

Of course, when you contemplate the price of purchasing a product like PaintShop Pro, it might just make more sense to call Microtek's tech support and just order the $29 replacement CD that contains ScanWizard, OmniPage-LE and uLead's iPhotoExpress. Their toll-free number is (800) 654-4160.

As I stated earlier, when you go to Microtek's website at www.adara.com you are actually going to a site that is still under construction. And the word "Adara" is nowhere to be found on that site. Nor is any kind of table to tell you which Adara products compare with which Microtek products. I don't know if they're planning on adding that information to that site or what, but I *strongly* suggest that all persons reading this send a strongly-worded and irritated e-mail message to the webmaster and the administrative contact at Microtek and let them know that the owe it to Adara owners to put up some kind of link to Adara pages on the Microtek website. all they'd need to put on their existing page is an icon entitled "Adara owners click here" and then it would take you to Adara informational pages which explain very much the same thing that I've explained herein.

To send a strongly-worded, irritated (but still respectful and constructive) e-mail to Microtek to encourage them to put-up some Adara informational pages, send to both the webmaster and the administrative contact for the domain. Their e-mail addresses are:

Webmaster
Pei Ku

Hope that helps everyone resolve their Adara scanner issues.

Good luck.

I see in my immediately previous posting that this bulletin board system removes all e-mail addresses from the text, even if you type it in properly. In my previous message I gave the e-mail addresses of the contacts at the Microtek website, but I see they've been redacted.

Here are the e-mail addresses where all Adara scanner owners should send a strongly-worded e-mail encouraging Microtek to put up some Adara informational pages on their website (at www.adara.com):

webmaster[at]microtek.com

ku[at]microtek.com

where the "[at]" character string is replaced in the *actual* e-mail address that you would type into your e-mail message's "To:" field with the standard circled-"a" symbol (the Shift-2 on your keyboard) common in all e-mail addresses.

There. That should get around this system's automatic editing of all posted messages!

Follow-up to my previous posting(s):

I downloaded and installed the Microtek ScanWizard for Windows 9x, and guess what? It's basically the very same software that used to come with the Adara scanners. The user interface is identical. The features are identical. Except for the splash screen during startup of the software, it's identical in appearance and function.

At most it appears that all Microtek has done to it that makes ScanWizard better than the older Adara software is that they're handled the parallel port virtual SCSI controller installation better -- included the most up-to-date version right in the installation of the ScanWizard. The older Adara software that used to come on the CD with an Adara scanner required you to go to the Adara website and download a patch to make the virtual SCSI controller work right.

So, everyone, don't lament that you can't get the old Adara software that originally came on the CD with your older or discontinued Adara scanner. The Microtek ScanWizard *is* that very same software, just updated. Read my earlier posting and go to their website and download it.

Also, in my earlier posting I stated that, while I knew of a decent free OCR software package that you could use in lieu of the OmniPage-LE software that used to come on the Adara scanner software CD, I did not know of a good free graphics program that you could use in lieu of the uLead iPhoto software that also used to come on said scanner CD.

Well, I still don't know of a really good graphics program that's also free. But, I recently checked-out a free graphics package called "ImageForge" from CurtisArts. And for a free paint program that's capable of special effects of the type possible in iPhoto, ImageForge ain't half bad.

ZDNet even gave it five stars. As freebies go, this one's a winner. It's no PaintShop Pro. But unlike PaintShop Pro, ImageForge is free. Now don't get confused. I'm not talking about ImageForge Pro, which isn't free. In fact, when I visited the CurtisArts website, they only talked about ImageForge Pro. I found no ImageForge freebie there (either that or I didn't look hard enough).

So if you want the free ImageForge package, the only sure-fire way I know to get it is to go to ZDNet's free downloads website and then do a search on the word "ImageForge."

You'll get at least two listings. One of them is for ImageForge Pro (fee-based shareware), and the other is for the completely free (and slightly less feature-packed) ImageForge. Be sure to pick the right one and then download and install it. I think you'll like it.

The ZDNet free downloads website is at:

http://www.zdnet.com/swlib

Find the search box and search on "ImageForge." Then do what I wrote in the above paragraph.

And that rounds-out the free software triad that you may acquire as a substitute for the software that used to come with an Adara scanner.

As referenced in my earlier posting, if you have an old Adara (or even a Microtek) scanner and no software for it, you can either contact Microtek's tech support department and use your credit card to purchase a replacement CD from Microtek for $29 (which CD will contain the Microtek ScanWizard software, including all necessary drivers to make your scanner work on your computer), and also the OmniPage-LE OCR software, and also the uLead iPhoto graphics, painting and photo touch-up software.

OR, you could acquire the equivalent of those three for free on the Internet by downloading the Microtek ScanWizard from the Microtek website. Then download the free wOCaR OCR software from Cyril Cambien's website in France (as described in my earlier posting). And then, finally, go to ZDNet's site and download the ImageForge software as a substitute for the iPhoto software.

Voila! All the software you need that is the equivalent of what came with your scanner back when it was new!

Good luck! Be sure to read my previous postings so you understand the whole, big picture.

Don't hesitate to send me an e-mail if you have questions.
