install ie4 sp2 but disable "active desktop" in the "display" section of control panel. it isn't worth the problems.

Install it and see if it gives you problems. I used it with win 95B version for over 2 years on 2 computers, plus a neighbors computer, and never had not one problem....Some people do not like it, but I would not be without it..

Ron,

It depends on how fast your computers are, because I have seen IE4 with Active Desktop on some 486s and P100- and they are DOGS. However, P100+ computers with 32MB+ memory are able to handle Microsoft's memory hog design.

ss recommended installing it but disabling it in Control Panel. There are two issues here: having it installed introduces possibilities for more problems. Having it installed AND enabling it introduces even more problems. If you have it installed but disable it, there is the possibility that you still will have problems with the file updates it installs into your system. So while ss's recommendation might save you some hassle, you still might have problems just by installing it.

At the same time, cat is right because you will oftentimes find computers with the update installed and never have a problem with it. I have seen many computers have problems with Active Desktop, but then again I have two at home with it installed and I have no problems. My other computer I am not ready to install it because I'm afraid to reap the consequences of the risk. :) Your gamble...
