When i click on a link that downloads the file to the temp directory, it gives me an access denied writing to temp error message. I updated to ie6.0 and set the properties to default but still get the same error message. There is almost 4 gigs of harddrive space still available and the OS is win98, Please help!

I assume you mean c:\windows\temp (some folk have c:\temp too.
What happens if you simply try to copy a file of your own into this folder? If the same thing happens look at the temp folder properties (right click) and see if it is set to read only.
Incidentally I think it is better to make up a folder of your own and choose this for downloads. Sometimes Windows puts junk in these temp folders, and if nothing else it can get confusing.

Hi Derek, I checked the file attributes and the only box checked is system. I changed the settings on the IE6.0 to look at a new directory to store temp. It caches internet files. It is not possible to copy a file to this directory nor is it possible to move a file to this location. I went back to the link where my boss needs to look at information but it still gives me an error message when it needs to download the file and open it. It works fine on other computers. I then set the option to defaults and tried it again but it still gave me that error message. I am lost now. DOnt know what to do. If you know of anything, can you please let me know,,Thanks for your help

I'm getting real confused, sorry.
Your original post seemed to imply a "folder" to which downloads would not go.
If so, what is the full address of that folder (I assumed c:\windows\temp), what are the attributes of that folder and what happens if you simply copy one of your own HD files, not a download, to that folder? It should not be marked as "system", this could prevent you putting anything in it.In post #3 you are referring to "file" attributes and that is where the confusion sets in. Are we talking about a file or a folder? Please clarify the exact postion, assume I'm a bit dense if need be!
In the meantime try making up a file of your own and then telling the download to go to that. It does strike me that with anything but Archive checked you could have trouble. Once again I emphasise the need to have a folder of your own for downloads.

Hi Derek, Thanks for replying. I dont have any problems with downloading normal zip files or attachments or whatever. I can put them in whatever directory I want. I do have a problem when my boss clicks on a link to go to a page and the page has to download to a temp directory in the background before opening up. This is not where i click to download something and choose to save it or open it. It happens in the background automatically. As soon as she clicks on a link to see a file, theres a message at the bottom of the brower, ftp://download.... and then the error message pops up saying that access is denied to C:/temp/temporary internet files/ContentIE5/..... I hope this is preety clear and i appreciate your help. Thanks Derek

Your explanation in #5 is fine, quite different to what I thought.
If you care to give me a webpage address with one of these links on it I can try it out on mine. ContentIE5 folders are indeed "system" folders.
I have a feeling I will not be able to help much on this one though, now I realise what you are saying. Let's hope someone else will step in.
Incidentally is the path really:
C:\temp\temporary internet files\ContentIE5 ?
I rather expected it to be:
c:\windows\temporary internet files etc.
