You can use the phone line as normal --- as long as you are not connected to the Internet. If you want both at the same time, then a second phone line is required.

I use the extra setting m1 in the modem init string to keep the modem speaker on all the time I am connected. When I here the beep from callwaiting I disconnect and answer the phone.

Again more good info, ergmiester.
Add "m1" to the front of the init string?

And how do I access the init string to begin with? Is there a certain text or other file to open that I can edit?

I put "m1" into extra settings and now hear the speaker on the modem, so it did have an effect. Tried calling the line, which has call waiting not disabled, and heard no beeping.

I had the same desire as you, to know about incoming calls while online without getting a second phone line.

I found the answer and its at www.imm.net I've been using it for a couple of days now and it works great and is apparently free except for the call forwarding on your line.

I just saw an ad recently for a new modem that not only detects when another call comes in and gives you the option to disconnect, but also will resume downloading a file when you re-connect after hanging up the phone! The brand name escapes me, but it is out there. I can only wonder why it has taken so long for something like this to come out; I've had many people ask me if this sort of thing was possible.

Peace,
Mike

It's an expensive option, but you could always use ISDN, that allows you to have two connections on the same line, and much faster access. I know, I took the plunge about a year ago, and it's wicked!

I had a free program i downloaded off an ad banner that would ring when a caller was trying to call you, then forward the caller to their 800# to record a message they wanted to leave, and would play it back for you immed. At that point you had the option to disconnect and call them back.But....my computer had some problems, went in the shop, and everything was cleared and i lost it.it was something called callwait?Anybody out there know anything about them?Thanks...

I too, like someone above tried to use a program called CallWait...I got it from snap.com on their software downloads page. It seems like just what everyone is looking for...a small, simple program which sits in the taskbar until someone calls...then it notifies you via a small pop-up window that someone is calling. You can then disconnect and take the call or continue working online and ignore it. The only problem is that the version currently availiable only works in the UK. As I live in the USA, this will not work. Anyone who knows where I can get a newer version of this program which works in the US, please email me. Thanks!

I'm also interested in this without having to get a scond phone line or disconnect from the net. What would a call waiting modem do?
What i would really like to do is stay on line and answer call on the computer via using the mic. is there any way of doing this?
