Greetings,
I just formatted a hittachihd equipped Gateway
solo 2300. The problem started when the normal
fdisk/format procedure wouldn't allow pc dos7.0
to install. To solve the problem I created two
partitions on the drive. One fat 16 (8mb)to
install dos/ the other exteneded partition
run fat32/win95-98. Win i tried to install wn98
I ran out of memory.I have fdisked and formatted before but have ne
ver had this problem. trying to do it the normal
way dos took up all of the memory area and
would not allow win3.1 to setup.(pcdos,then win3.1 then win95 then win98)

"pcdos,then win3.1 then win95 then win98"
Yes, that certainly would be the 'tricky' way to go about installing Windows 98
Most folks choose a simpler method
We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

Possibly the out of memory error came when Win98 tried to create or use the swap file. By default, this goes on the C: partition. Since this is only 8MB, it aint gonna fit!
Rather than reinstalling the older versions and upgrading. You could try installing Win 98 from the upgrade CD and supply the disks for the older versions when demanded.

If you really want to get multiple OS's to install properly use a partition manager and create primary partitions for each OS starting with DOS FAT16 first. You should install each OS independently. Have only one partition active at a time. Then to get them to boot as required you will need a boot manager.

When I use the 98se disk, will i have to reformat the hard drive first? I'm betting "yes you will have to reformat the HD first"If I take that route, do I have to install pcdos 7 first? And how would I prevent pcdos from taking up 100% of the HD?

So many questions - what are you actually trying to do?
If your intention is to install Win98, period, then there's no need for anything else.
If you are attempting to setup a multi-OS system (not the best project for a beginner) then you'd want to look into a boot manager (as suggested)
"will i have to reformat the hard drive first"
... maybe - but if you want to change the partitioning scheme, you'd have to use FDISK first

I bought a used laptop and wanted to fdisk and format and start "fresh". I had thought that the pc dos7 and some version of windows had to be installed before I could install win98se.I am not trying to create multiboot system, I had thought that win3.1 couldn't be upgraded to win98 so I installed win95 in order to upgrade to 98.When I tried to install win95 the prompt said that "windows required to be present before win95 can be installed" so I installed win3.1. Win95 is loaded right now and it is working, but I want win98se to be the OS.

I have never heard of anyone (until now) taking such a circuitous route to a simple installation of Windows
98 is an OS unto itself - nothing else is required, unless you're using 'upgrade' installation discs (and there are various methods around that)
PC DOS is not really involved at all (different companies)

Yes, the the win98 disk that i have is only a upgrade disk. I have win95 on both cd and floppies, the cd wouldn't load and the floppies gave me a error warning about "previous version of windows" and "dos is required to be installed before we can proceed" I also have the win95"companion cd".
What would be the best and simplest way to install the win98 upgrade?

Get rid of that silly partitioning scheme. Yes you will now have to format.
Boot using a win98 boot disk. Insert the Win98 CD. Type setup and answer the questions just like you always have. When setup asks for proof That you qualify to use the upgrade CD, supply the proof it asks for (pop in the disk or CD).

If you are the object is to install ONLY Windows98, then the post above will work. A somewhat better way is to copy the install files to the hard drive first.
Boot up with a '98 floppy. "Format" may or may not be available on the floppy.
Fdisk the drive, and create a FAT32 partition.
Format the drive. If format is not on the floppy, switch to X: (cdrom drive)
CD Win98
format should be in that directory.
When hdd is formatted,
MD c:\Win98
x:\win98 copy *.* C:\win98
When files are all copied,
C:\Win98 setup.exe
Setup should start.
Setup will, as stated above, "ask" for your former version (95" media.
If you have a machine with a CD burner, it's fairly easy to "create" a CD which will accomplish this all in one shot.
Here's what I did:
Using Windows95 CD, copyied \Win95 to temp folder
Using Windows98 Upgrade CD, Copied \Win98 to temp folder.
Downloaded and made approprieate 98 bootdisk
Using Nero, 'made' bootable CD, using bootdisk for boot image.
Copied \Win95 and \Win98 folder to CD contents.
When you are done, you will have a bootable Winhoed98 install CD, with all the files you need to install "clean"

thanks to all, I do not have a cd burner as of yet. However, I read a circa (2000?) post that said all that was needed "prove" that you had win already installed was the first disk of either 3.1 or 95.And a my last question, do i have to install pcdos before trying to install win98?

""And a my last question, do i have to install pcdos before trying to install win98?""
Evidently you haven't carefully read the posts here. NO

Thanks to all. Simply inserting the win98 disk and using the win95 floppies got me sailing right along.
thank you.
