The restart works in 98se, but when I go to shut down the windows 98 shut down screen appears but it freezes (will not shut off).
Two days ago I downloaded a critical update from windows update and this has been the only download that I have done recently. I just started noticing this problem yesterday, but it did shut down the day before when I did the critical update.
Anyone know the answer to this?

There are so many possibilities for this problem whole books have been written on the subject. However, try this go to Start-Run-type in msconfig- click on advanced, uncheck enable fast shutdown. If that doesn't work, I will refer you to a page of trouble shooting info.

JayT,
Within advanced on msconfig there is NO listing for enable fast shutdown.
So... there is no way that I can uncheck it!

"whole books have been written on the subject."
LOL JayT, how true!Elknarps, check disable fast shutdown.

When I had that problem, I went into msconfig and unchecked all unnecessary startup programs. That did the trick for me.

bert,
There is NO "disable fast shutdown" either in the advanced section on msconfig.
ARE YOU GUYS JUST SENDING ME ON A WILD GOOSE CHASE?

If the Win98SE Shut-down patch has been installed, the "disable fast shut-down" entry is removed from MSCONFIG. Try the following:
Disable virus scanning of floppys on shutdown
Install Mapped drive shutdown patch
Disable sounds on shutdown.
Check for conflicts in device manager.

Sorry my friend. I was NOT kidding about the number of reasons for this problem. Here is a list of troubleshooting from the MS Knowledge Base:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q238/0/96.asp&NoWebContent=1

When I had that problem with a Dell 4100 the only thing that worked was flashing the bios. And Dell graciously sent me the new bios.

When I run into an unfixable shutdown problem, a format install has always fixed it. But maybe I have just been lucky???

If you had no problem shutting down before you installed the MS updates maybe there is hope. Restart the computer in MSDOS mode. At the C prompt type in scanreg /restore (space after scanreg), hit enter and choose a date prior to when your shutdown problems began. You will lose the updates, but it might fix the shutdown problem. Sorry I didn't think of this before.
