I've heard a lot of negative thing about windows ME. What are the differences between ME and 98SE? What was added to ME? What was taken out?

Win ME is like W98SE but with added eye candy and XP-like features of dubious necessity, which impaired reliability. I do believe it is possible for Win ME to be made reliable but it takes some effort.

DOS was made inaccessible in Win ME (although it still used it).

I agree with Derek. If you want to run an older OS,go with 98 SE. It's much more stable and reliable.

Please sit back and relax while Windows 98 installs on your computer.

Windows ME was meant to be what became Windows XP Home.

After Windows 98 was released Microsoft decided to consolidate its Operating Systems and do away with the two separate NT based and DOS based Systems and make an NT based system for home use.

All this was intended to be done by the new millennium. Upgrading Windows NT to Windows 2000 was a relatively easy task but upgrading Windows 98 to and NT based system was not so easy. Consequently in order to have a home system ready for the new millennium they issued Windows Me which was neither Windows 98 nor Windows NT, something in between that was not really ready for release. A bit of a hybrid.

It was another couple of years before an NT based system for home use was ready for release in the form of Windows XP Home and Windows 2000 was upgrades to Windows XP Professional.

Stuart spelled out the history pretty well.

Personally, I stuck with WinME until I learned to tame it. There are plenty of websites that offer tips on how to do just that. Trev's "How to run Windows ME well" site is/was very popular. I disagree with his advice about system restore though. IMO, it should be disabled immediately & NEVER enabled again - ever! I'm still running a modded version of WinME (98Lite) on one of my older PCs (K6-2/450) to this day.

Windows ME vs. 98SE,..... lol. There is no vs., Windows 98SE stomps ME into the ground.

We tried to switch to ME back in the day at the repair shop I worked at. It didn't work out, in fact thats putting it nicely. We went back to 98SE until XP came out.

ME never became stable and support was dropped for it by microsoft. I imagine the same will happen to Crapista(Vista) once Windows 7 comes out.

End result, stay away from ME, don't touch it with a ten foot poll!
