I just built a new system "loaded"
so I went to install my windows 98se from my old gateway and all the data files copyed just fine but when i run setup it gives me a message that its not a gateway pc. how do I get past this message. Im thinking it's a bin file or a oem setup file I'm not sure can someone shed some lite for me.Thanks
Russ

it would be best to load win98se fresh, then add your important data to it, by 'slaving' the drive to the new drive.

Humm, you mught be in for some problems. installing from a former gateway disk means you will also be loading drivers for that machine, not the necessary drivers for your new motherboard.
Many times OEM's customize their supplied OS with stuff particular to their hardware.

this disk is just the 98se OS and not the disk with the drivers for the other things.
and i am loading fresh I just copyed from cd rom *.* to c: drive and when I run setup it gives me the message for gateway only Im thinking of deleting a bin file so it daesnt look for the machine.

You might want to post back the DIR listing of the files on the root directory of the cd. Maybe we can see if there's an obvious difference between yours and a generic 98 cd. But I doubt it would be that simple.
Also what was the exact command line you used to copy the files to the hard drive?

If you still have the old Gateway system... Here is what I would try:
Install the drive from the new system into the old system as C:. Try installing windows again. If it's successful, boot up in safe mode. Start up regedit and remove the following Registry entry:
Hkey_Local_Machine\Enum
That will remove all the Device Manager drivers. Move the drive back to the new system.

I recall that some of the Gateway OEM CD's for Win98 were absolutely vendor-specific (and maybe even hardware model specific). I would doubt that it's a good idea to install a Gateway version of Win98 in your new system. Win98 CD's are really cheap these days and I'd opt for a non-vendor specific full install CD. It'll save you a lot of grief in the future if you change anything and it requires the Win-98 CD to complete. If all it finds is the Gateway CD, you'll have more headaches.
