Hi Bob.
Have you tried running ScanDisk from Safe Mode?
While booting up, hold down the F8 key when you see the cursor blinking in the upper right of your screen.
A menu should appear allowing you to choose Safe Mode.
Run ScanDisk in Safe Mode.
Take care,
Linda

You can also try running Scandisk in DOS.
Restart the computer, press <CTRL> or <F8> key before Win98 logo appears. At the menu, go to the command mode.
At the C:\> prompt, key in: scandisk /all /autofix /nosave /nosummary /surface Press enter.
(There is a space before each forward slash /)
Description: /all - Checks and repairs all local drives. /autofix - Makes repairs without prompting user. /nosave - Does not save lost clusters. Use with /autofix switch. /nosummary - Does not display summary. Does not prompt for undo disk. /surface - Automatically performs a surface scan after checking the drive.
