I'm stuck on line 59. My lap top does not have a drive E I believe is is because I swapped out the floppy frive to use the cd rom drive. I need to figure out how to make it see the cd rom drive to copy the 98se disk. my lap top floppy and cd swap in and out with just a flip of a lever, but now I have no idea why it does not see the drive.

As I said I'm stuck on step 59

I will post when it is fixed, I will be watch this post all night.

Maybe I have missed something. But can't you just insert the win98SE cd in the cdrom drive and then double click on the setup program in the drive?

I wanted to clean everything out of the laptop and start fresh. Thans why I did the fdisk.

My problem started because I can only use 1 drive at a time. when I was done with the boof disk and was ready to put the 98se disk in the drive I had to swap the floppy drive with the cd drive. When I tried to enter e:/ it does not reconize the drive, so It can not access the 98 se cd.

Ham30 your way would probably be better, but this is not something Ii have done befor, so I followed what ever I could find, but ran into problems due to the swapable drives.

Go to www.mesich.com > How to's > installing with swappable drives.

Note that if you have an 'Upgrade' win98SE CD, you will need proof of prior ownership of windows. That means a win98FE CD or win3 floppies.

If you have an 'Update' CD, it will not do the job, becuse it has to be run from windows.

Do you not have the cable that activates the floppy externally during all of this? If not, try here:

Set the BIOS to boot from the CD drive, insert the genuine Win98SE CD, power it up and follow the prompts. It is really quite simple that way. Takes about 49 minutes. (closer to 30 really)

Can I change the BIOS to boot from the cd drive? will this help me as stated a few post ago?

I can not get it see the cd drive (the win98se disk) If I cant access the drive I can not copy the files from the 98se disk to my hars drive.
Every drive I try says invalid drive. I made a boot disk on cd and it started up with c:\ but I could not get it to chang from c:\

Sorry if this does not make sense....I don't do much of this.

I've not been following this post but yes, you can go into BIOS then change the settings so that your CD drive is first.

Then see #14. Make sure you have the Product Key available for the W98SE CD.

You pop the CD in the drive and leave it in place. Power-off then power-on again.

If this works out then reset back to your old BIOS settings after you've got Windows running.

I'm none to familiar with shared drive machines but what I've said sounds about right.

Might just be a dodgy CD.

You can try cleaning it carefully with washing up liquid and warm water (using your thumb to work from center to outside). Dry it thorougly with kitchen roll and blow any fibers off it.

Otherwise, progman.exe is probably not too important provided you can OK it and continue to load Windows. Progman.exe is an unused hang-over from the W31 days.

I cleaned the disk, It did not help. I still get the same error.

This is how I got to this point.

For those of you not familiar with copying files in DOS or editing the config.sys and autoexec.bat files I have added the information below to further assist you.

1. Download boot.zip
2. Unzip the files to a blank floppy.
3. Restart the computer using the bootdisk.

You will get the following error messages:
The following file is missing or corrupted C:\Cd1.sys There is an error in your config.sys file on line 1 A:\>C:\mscdex.exe /D:Mscd001 Bad command or file name
Do not be concerned with the above errors and continue to step 4.

4. At the A:\type sys c: Press Enter

You should see the following message:
System Transferred

5. At the A:\>type install Press Enter

You should see the following:

1 file(s) copied
1 file(s) copied
1 file(s) copied
1 file(s) copied

6. Shutdown the computer and swap out the floppy with the cdrom.
7. Restart the computer without the bootdisk.
8. Insert the Win98 CD.
9. At the C:\>type D: Press Enter
10. At D:\>type setup Press Enter

This is as far as I got. then the error

Again, Credit to goes to Krystyna.

Update,
I got through the set up and windows had be make a boot disk...things were rolling... then when it is installing 98se it just stops at 6% installed and the cd drive sounds like it is searching. I thinks the disk is bad, surface has some small scratches, but not bad. Now I have to find another disk.

It also gives me a error message that interupted the install.

Just my luck!!

Anyone know what a 98 se disk cost new? Still easy to get? I dont think I can run xp.

Thanks for everyone's help.

You sometimes see them on eBay.

Did you try suggestion #24. It might sound odd but Street1 is right, sometimes when you copy a disk it seems to manage it (despite scratches) and then the copy runs fine.

If you do this use a CD-R (not CD-RW) and try to "finalise" it or "Close Session" (depending on the terminology the burner software uses). When they are left open for further burning they can be less reliable.
