Ok i had a Dual boot set up of 98SE and XP. I deleted the Partition XP was on with Partition Commander CD. Then i resized the drive back to normal size. When i rebooted it still came up the choose OS menue. Even when XP was gone! So i edited a file boot.ini thought i was doing the right thing. Then the computer would not boot to 98. So i load 98 on top of 98 and it boots to 98 just fine. But when i tap the F8 key to get to a boot menue i got the XP Boot menue Safe Mode Safe Mode with Networking Safe Mode with Command promp ETC. How do i get this 98 setup back to normal like there was never a dual boot? The only reason i dual booted is to prove to a friend that a 98 and XP dual boot can be FAT32 and NTFS. Please give any ideas.

Hi Win98User, hi everyone

As far as I am concerned, interesting issue... haven't dealt with such before. Never bothered to get rid of the XP installation, and yes also on FAT32. :-)
On the other hand maybe I don't understand what you are trying to tell us, language barrier perhaps.

From what you describe when you tab the [F8]key, it pretty much resembles the usual Boot Menu you get on Win98. Unless there are more options, not mentioned, to boot to normal XP for example.
Normally there are 5 or 6 options in the Win98 Boot Menu when you tab the [F8]key. Aside from the ones you mentioned there are:
- MS DOS prompt only
- Normal or something like that.
On some machines, installed with MS-DOS and MS Windows x.xx, something like Older DOS version.

What does your computer exactly show when you boot in to Safe Mode, tapping the [F8]key?

It boots to normal 98 mode. The boot menue is the xp boot menue not the 98 menue. It still has xp in the boot.ini. I just not sure how to get it out.

The OP need to edit the Boot.ini file in Win98. I am not exactly sure of the exact syntax.

Win98User

You need to provide additional info. Do you have more than one harddrive? What partition is Win98 on? The primary? Look at the boot.ini in WinXP to see how Win98 is listed there. It needs to be the same way EG: Windows disk 0 partition 1.

Just copy and paste the entire boot.ini from WinXP. Find it in the root directory of the XP partition.

Windows XP is Gone it was on a secound partition that was NTFS 98 was on the 1st that was FAT32. But when i tap the F8 key to get to a boot menue it comes up the XP boot menue and not the one for 98 for some strange reason. I have reloaded 98 over 98. And it still comes up the XP menue when i tap F8. I needed to go to DOS and do scanreg/fix i always do that after i install programs ETC in 98 because it fixes alot of issues. I really don't want to have to format the drive because i have all my old 98 games installed.

"What does your computer exactly show when you boot in to Safe Mode, tapping the [F8]key?"

When i select safe mode it comes up looks like the OS choice menue but the only choice is Microsoft Windows 98 and it has select the operating system to start:
Microsoft Windows 98
Thats the only choice i hit enter and it boots to 98 normal mode. I need to edit the boot.ini but not sure what to put there.

To remove the Windows XP dual boot do the following.
Boot up with a windows98 boot disk and at the command prompt type the following Command.
sys C: and press enter.
now type fdisk /mbr and press enter.
Next remove the boot disk and reboot and it should take you into windows 98.
Now to remove the file left behind on C: that Windows XP places there for a dual boot.
Go into C: drive and delete the following files.
Boot.ini, Bootsect.dos, ntdetect.com, and
ntldr. These files are hidden so you will need to make sure show hidden files is set in your FOLDERS Options ,View in the Control Panel.

If you follow JPW's advice it all "ought" to revert to a '98 (only) standard boot...

Thank you so much. I have learned something today. I had already looked for those files. I had it set to view all files. I didn't see them lastnight but it was so late.

Hi Win98User, OtheHill, JPW, trvlr, Ghostman1, hi everyone

JPW was ahead of me, response #7 was my first thought as well but I got intrigued (better say distracted) by the Boot Menu, it would have been my next logical step to take.

Editing Boot.ini wouldn't have/doesn't solved the issue with the Boot Menu.

I hope you are back to the Boot Menu, when tapping the [F8]key, you are accustomed too.
