when i get windows installed and runnin the way i want it, is there a way to back it up to a cd so then it can be restored in the event of a system failure. like a disaster recovery disc or system restore disc that would come with a computer. any ideas would be nice, thanks.

You could buy Norton Ghost 9. It will do a complete backup of your HDD. You can get it cheap at softwarediner.com. Good Luck.

with norton ghost can i make an image of my hard drive, then transfer it to my desktop and burn it to a cd so i can restore it off of the cd? say, backup the hdd to an image file like an ISO image thats bootable, then burn it to a cd then when i need to, restore from it by booting from it in my cd rom? thanks for the quick replies!

Although I have nothing against Ghost, you don't need Ghost to do this. My old Nero 5 can burn HD backups, with no additional software needed. I suspect other CD burning programs also have this capability.

I use Ghost 2003, which is new enough to handle just about any system up through X tra P utrid, yet this version of Ghost doesn't need to be "activated." (yes the Ghost, not the XP.)
There are several ways to use Ghost:
You can directly copy (clone) from one hard drive to the other.
You can create an "image" and burn to a CD/ DVD, or you can send the image to another hard drive, or over a network.
So, you should be able to network your laptop, and "Ghost" an image over a network to be stored on your desktop hard drive, and from there, you can burn a CD(s) of the backup.
If the laptop does NOT have a boot floppy separte from it's own CD, you'll need to MAKE SURE that you build a bootable CD, and put the Ghose executeable on the CD, so you can run everything from the CD(s)
The actual Ghost program that does the work runs from DOS (can be a floppy) so it doesn't take much to get that going.
There is some learning curve, but once you've got things set up (take some notes and TEST IT) you'll find it's not all that hard.
On my desktop, I create a backup of a known "clean" situation about every two weeks. That way, if I had some real serious crash, instead of re-installing everything, I'd only lose a week or two worth of bookmarks. Additionally, restoring a hard drive only takes a few minutes, compared to hours of reinstalling every last bit of software--if you can find it--that was on the hdd.
