3com Integrated Ethernet Controller, Linksys Router.

NIC is configured for DHCP. It gets an IP from the router, and it is possible to connect to the router via Internet Explorer and http://192.xxx.x.xxx However, when using internet explorer normally to browse the web, it simply produces "detecting proxy settings" in the status bar and does not navigate to any web pages at all. Any ideas what may be causing this problem?

look at the tools/internet options/connections/lan setting and make sure the proxy box and auto setting are not checked.
